What dominatesMaterial extrusion is 85% of the time, so this is flow-limited. Raising the layer height or the nozzle diameter cuts the time roughly proportionally; raising the speed only helps until the hotend cannot melt fast enough.

This is a volumetric estimate, not a slice. A slicer knows the geometry and this does not, so treat it as a planning figure — right to within roughly 20% on typical parts and considerably worse on very tall thin ones. Two things set print time, and which one dominates decides what to change. A bulky part is flow-limited, so layer height and nozzle diameter matter; a tall thin one is layer-limited, so only the layer count does. Speed has a ceiling the hotend sets. Most 0.4 mm hotends melt somewhere between 8 and 15 mm³/s, and asking for more than that produces under-extrusion rather than a faster print.

How accurate is a print time estimate without slicing?

Within roughly 20% on typical parts and considerably worse on very tall thin ones, where per-layer overhead dominates and volume says almost nothing.

What makes a print take longer — height or volume?

Both, but which dominates decides what to change. Bulky parts are flow-limited, so layer height and nozzle size matter; tall thin ones are layer-limited, so only layer count does.

Does doubling print speed halve the time?

No. Travel, acceleration and per-layer overhead do not scale with speed, and the hotend has a melting ceiling of roughly 8 to 15 mm³/s on a 0.4 mm nozzle.

How much does infill affect print time?

Less than people expect on thin-walled parts, where perimeters dominate, and a great deal on chunky ones. Going from 20% to 80% roughly doubles a solid-ish part.

Do supports add much?

Typically 15 to 25% in material and time, plus the cleanup. Reorienting the part to reduce overhangs saves more than any support setting.
