Watts, kilowatt-hours, and the factor of a thousand

Electricity is billed in kilowatt-hours: one kilowatt drawn for one hour. An appliance rated in watts has to be divided by 1,000 first, and that division is where most of these calculations go wrong — by a factor of exactly a thousand, which at least announces itself.

A 2,000 W appliance run for half an hour uses 1 kWh. At 28p that is 28p a use, £1.96 a week if used daily, and about £102 a year. The per-use figure is small enough to ignore and the annual figure is not, which is the entire reason for annualising.

The rating plate is a maximum rather than a constant draw. A washing machine pulls its rated power only while heating water; a fridge cycles on and off. For anything that does not run flat out, a plug-in energy monitor gives a far better figure than the label.

Standby, and the 8,760-hour year

Standby power is small and continuous, and continuous is what makes it matter. A device drawing 5 W does so for 8,760 hours a year, which is 43.8 kWh — about £12 at 28p, from a load nobody would notice on any single bill.

One device is trivial. A modern household has a set-top box, a games console, several chargers, a microwave clock, a television, a router and a smart speaker, and the total reaches a figure worth acting on. It is invisible precisely because it is spread across everything.

The calculation here applies standby across the hours the appliance is not in active use, rather than across the whole year, which avoids double-counting the hours it is running. For something used an hour a day the distinction barely matters; for something used constantly it does.

Which appliances actually cost money

Anything that heats dominates: electric showers, immersion heaters, tumble dryers, ovens, kettles. Converting electricity to heat is inherently power-hungry, which is why a 9 kW shower costs more per minute than almost anything else in the house.

Anything that runs continuously comes second. Fridges and freezers draw modest power and never switch off, so a year of it adds up. This is the profile where an efficient replacement can genuinely pay for itself, because the saving accrues every hour for a decade.

Electronics are mostly a rounding error in active use and matter through standby. The practical order of attack is therefore: heating loads first, always-on appliances second, standby third — which is roughly the opposite of the order most energy-saving advice presents them in.

Only through what they show you. The meter itself changes nothing; the in-home display makes consumption visible, and visible consumption tends to fall. The effect is real and modest.

Is it cheaper to run appliances at night?

Only on a time-of-use tariff. On a flat tariff the time makes no difference, and running a tumble dryer overnight while asleep carries a fire risk that some insurers take a view on.

What is phantom load?

The power drawn by devices that are switched off but plugged in. Individually small, and across a modern household it adds up to a measurable annual sum — chargers, set-top boxes and anything with a standby light.

How much does an electric shower cost per use?

A 9 kW shower for ten minutes uses 1.5 kWh, which at 28p is about 42p. It is one of the highest-power appliances in most homes and its cost is genuinely proportional to time spent.

Does an old fridge cost much more than a new one?

Often substantially. Refrigeration efficiency has improved a great deal, and a fridge runs continuously for a decade or more — which is exactly the profile where a replacement can pay for itself.
