That is the constraint that shapes every trip on foot. Two litres a day for drinking alone is 2 kg per person per day, and a three-day supply for one person is around 12 kg before food, shelter or anything else goes in the pack.

Which is why beyond a day trip the answer is almost always to treat water on route rather than carry it. Planning around water sources is a more useful exercise than planning around pack capacity, and it is what determines a realistic route.

Vehicle-based camping changes the arithmetic completely, since weight stops mattering. There the constraint is container volume and how long stored water stays palatable, which is a different problem with different answers.

Heat and exertion raise needs sharply

The two-litre baseline is for a sedentary person in a temperate climate. Hard walking under load can double it, and heat multiplies again — a hot day at high exertion can push drinking needs past six litres.

The scaling is not gentle. Sweat rate rises steeply with both effort and ambient temperature, and it is the dominant loss path. Planning a hot trip on temperate figures is one of the more common ways people get into trouble.

Altitude adds a third factor that catches people out. Respiration rate rises and the air is drier, so more is lost through breathing — while altitude simultaneously suppresses thirst, removing the signal that would normally prompt drinking.

Treating water, and what each method misses

Boiling is the most reliable single method: reaching a rolling boil is sufficient at most altitudes, with a few minutes held above about 2,000 metres. It handles everything, and it costs fuel and time.

Filters handle protozoa and bacteria and generally not viruses, which are small enough to pass most pore sizes. Chemical treatment handles viruses but works slowly in cold water and struggles against cryptosporidium. Carrying two methods covers the gaps.

Clear fast-flowing water is not safe water. Giardia and cryptosporidium from livestock or wildlife upstream are invisible and tasteless, and a mountain stream is exactly the source people trust most and should not.
