A ceiling fan cools people rather than rooms — it works by moving air across skin, which speeds evaporation, and it does nothing to the air temperature. Leaving one running in an empty room wastes energy and warms the room very slightly through motor heat. Blades should sit at least 2.1 m above the floor and around 25 to 30 cm below the ceiling, since a fan mounted too close to the ceiling cannot draw air into itself properly and moves far less than its rating.

A ceiling fan moves air across skin, which speeds evaporation and makes people feel cooler. It does nothing to the air temperature — and the motor adds a small amount of heat, so a fan running in an empty room warms it very slightly.
Which is why leaving one running when nobody is there is pure waste. It is also why the useful measure of a fan is airflow rather than blade span: two fans of the same diameter can differ substantially in what they actually move.
The efficient use is alongside air conditioning rather than instead of it. Air movement lets the thermostat sit a couple of degrees higher for the same comfort, and the fan uses a small fraction of what that saves.
Size, height and why mounting matters
Blade span is matched to room area — roughly 75 cm for a small room up to 152 cm for a large one. A long room is better served by two fans than one very large one, because a single fan only moves air where it is.
Height matters in both directions. Blades need at least 2.1 m of floor clearance for safety, and 25 to 30 cm below the ceiling so the fan can draw air into itself. Mounted too close to the ceiling it moves far less than its rating.
High ceilings therefore need a longer downrod to bring the blades into the occupied zone. A fan four metres up moves air well above where anyone is standing, which is airflow doing nothing useful.
Winter mode, wobble and motor type
Reversing the direction and running slowly pushes air upward, displacing warm air down the walls without creating a draught. Running it forward in winter simply makes people feel colder, which is the opposite of the intention.
Wobble is usually blade imbalance or a loose mounting. A balancing kit corrects imbalance; a wobble that persists after balancing is a mounting problem, and it is worth fixing properly rather than living with.
DC motors use substantially less power than AC for the same airflow, run more quietly, and usually offer more speed steps. They cost more up front, and for a fan that runs many hours a day the difference is recovered.
