Why π appears in both formulas

Circumference is 2πr by the definition of π as the ratio of circumference to diameter. Area is πr² for a less obvious reason, and the two are connected rather than coincidental.

Cut a circle into many thin sectors and interleave them into a near-rectangle. The width approaches half the circumference — πr — and the height approaches the radius, giving an area of πr².

That construction predates calculus and gives the right answer exactly. Integration does the same thing rigorously by summing infinitesimal rings, and both arrive at πr² because it is the same circle.

The 78.54% that never changes

A circle fills π/4 of the smallest square containing it, which is 78.54%, regardless of size. The ratio is scale-invariant because both areas scale with the square of the linear dimension.

It explains several everyday observations. A round pizza in a square box always looks wasteful; a circular duct carries more air than a square one of the same width; a round table seats more per unit of floor than its footprint suggests.

The sphere version is π/6, or 52.36% of its cube. That larger gap is why packing spheres wastes so much space — even the densest possible arrangement leaves about 26% empty.

Sectors, segments and the annulus

A sector's area is the circle's area times the fraction of the full turn it covers. In radians that becomes half r squared times the angle, with no conversion factor — which is one reason radians are the natural unit.

A segment is the region cut off by a chord: the sector minus the triangle formed by the two radii and the chord. It is the calculation needed for liquid in a cylindrical tank lying on its side, which is why it is less obscure than it sounds.

An annulus is the ring between two concentric circles, π(R² − r²). Written that way it is simpler than most people expect, and it handles washers, pipe cross-sections and running tracks alike.
