Conception Date Calculator
Estimated conception date from a due date or last period.
Estimate the likely conception date from a due date or last menstrual period, with the range of dates it could plausibly have occurred.
The uncertainty here spans a week or more. This must never be used to determine paternity, only DNA testing can do that.

How the Conception Date Calculator works
Conception happens within about 24 hours of ovulation, but because sperm survive up to five days, the date of intercourse and the date of conception are often not the same. Any estimate is a window rather than a single day.

Working backwards from a due date
Pregnancy dating conventionally counts from the first day of the last menstrual period, not from conception, which puts a full-term pregnancy at 40 weeks.
Conception occurs around two weeks after that starting point in a 28 day cycle, which means the actual gestational age of the embryo is about two weeks less than the pregnancy is described as being.
So estimating a conception date from a due date means subtracting 266 days rather than 280, and the result is an estimate with a window around it rather than a date.
The size of the window
Because sperm survive up to five days, conception can occur several days after intercourse. That alone gives a window rather than a point.
Ovulation timing varies, so the two-week assumption may be wrong by several days in either direction, particularly for anyone whose cycle is not 28 days.
The practical result is a conception window of roughly a week to ten days for most pregnancies. Anyone hoping to establish a precise date, for any reason, should understand that the estimate cannot provide one.
Ultrasound dating
An early ultrasound, ideally between 8 and 14 weeks, dates a pregnancy more accurately than menstrual dates by measuring the crown-rump length.
In the first trimester embryos grow at a remarkably consistent rate, so the measurement predicts gestational age within about five days. Later scans are less accurate for dating because growth varies more between individuals.
Where the scan and the menstrual dates disagree by more than about a week, the scan date is generally used. That is standard practice and it can shift a due date and therefore a conception estimate meaningfully.
Where accuracy actually matters
Clinically, the due date matters for scheduling screening tests, monitoring growth, and deciding about induction. Those decisions use the ultrasound date rather than a calculation.
Outside the clinic, people calculate conception dates for personal reasons and occasionally for legal ones. For any legal purpose, an estimate from a website carries no weight and a medical record does.
It is worth saying plainly that these estimates have caused real distress in relationships when treated as precise. A conception window of ten days is genuinely a window, and narrowing it further requires medical dating rather than arithmetic.
The variation in pregnancy length itself
Only around 4% of babies arrive on their estimated due date. Term is defined as 37 to 42 weeks, which is a five week span.
Research measuring pregnancy length from precisely dated conception has found natural variation of around 37 days between the shortest and longest, in pregnancies with no complications.
Which means the due date is the centre of a distribution rather than an appointment. Working backwards from a birth date to a conception date inherits all of that variation, and the resulting estimate is correspondingly wide.
There is one further reason the estimate is imprecise that is easy to overlook: implantation is not conception. Fertilisation happens within a day of ovulation, and the embryo implants roughly six to ten days later, which is when hormone levels begin to rise and a pregnancy test becomes positive. People sometimes work backwards from a positive test, which lands nearer the implantation date than the conception date and pushes the estimate later by more than a week. Anyone reconstructing dates should be clear about which event they are actually trying to locate.

Frequently asked questions
How is conception date estimated?
By subtracting 266 days from the estimated due date, or adding about 14 days to the first day of the last menstrual period on a 28-day cycle. Both assume ovulation happened on schedule, which is frequently not the case.
How accurate is a conception date?
It is an estimate with a window of several days either side. Even an early ultrasound, which dates a pregnancy more accurately than any calculation, has a margin of roughly ±5 days in the first trimester.
Can conception happen days after intercourse?
Yes, and it often does. Sperm can survive up to five days in fertile cervical mucus, so conception may occur several days after intercourse, whenever the egg is actually released.
Should this be used to determine paternity?
No. The uncertainty spans a week or more, which is easily enough to be misleading. DNA testing is the only reliable method, and legal or medical decisions should never rest on a calculated conception date.
