Converting volume to weight is not: a cup of flour and a cup of honey differ by nearly threefold, which is why this asks for a density rather than assuming water. That assumption is what makes most online conversions wrong for everything except water. What is exact and what is not

Within the US customary system the volume relationships are definitional: a cup is exactly 16 tablespoons, 48 teaspoons and 8 fluid ounces, and 236.5882365 millilitres.

Across systems they are not. A metric cup is 250 ml, an Australian tablespoon is 20 ml rather than 15 — making it four teaspoons rather than three — and older British recipes may mean something else again.

Why volume to weight needs a density

A cup of water weighs 237 g, a cup of flour about 125 g, and a cup of honey about 336 g. They are the same volume and nearly threefold apart in weight.

So any converter that turns cups into grams without asking what the ingredient is has silently assumed water, and is wrong for everything else. This page asks instead.

Flour is the worst case even against itself: scooped flour can be 20% heavier than spooned flour of the same nominal volume, because it compacts. That variability is the real argument for baking by weight rather than by volume.
