The gap between boards is not optional. Timber moves with moisture, and boards butted tight will cup and buckle as they take up water — 5 to 6 mm is conventional for timber and less for composite, which moves differently. The gap also lets water drain rather than sitting on the joists, which is what rots a deck from underneath. Boards run perpendicular to the joists, so the joist spacing is set by the board thickness and the span it can bridge without deflecting.

The gap is structural, not cosmetic

Timber moves with moisture across its width — several percent between wet and dry. Boards fitted tight when damp will cup and buckle as they dry; boards fitted very dry will swell and close the gap and then buckle when they swell further.

Around 5 to 6 mm suits timber at typical fitting moisture content, and less suits composite, which moves with temperature rather than moisture. The correct gap depends on the condition of the boards on the day they go down.

The gap also lets water drain rather than sitting on the joists. Water trapped between board and joist is what rots a deck from underneath, long before the visible surface shows anything — which is why joist tape over the top of each joist extends deck life so substantially.

Boards, joists and which way round

Boards run perpendicular to the joists, so the joist spacing is set by what the board can span without deflecting — commonly 400 mm, closer for thinner or composite boards, and closer again where boards run diagonally and effectively span further.

The board manufacturer's span figure is the one to follow rather than a general rule, because composite and timber behave very differently and composite manufacturers specify tightly.

The grooved side of most profiles goes down, which is counter-intuitive. The grooves are for ventilation and drainage underneath; a grooved upper surface traps dirt, holds water, and is slippery when wet.

Fixings, ends and what actually fails

Screws rather than nails, in stainless or a coating rated for the timber treatment. Nails work loose as boards move seasonally, and modern preservative treatments are corrosive to ordinary steel — a plain screw fails from the inside within a few years.

End grain absorbs many times more moisture than the face, and every cut end has lost whatever factory treatment it had. Sealing cut ends is one of the highest-return steps in building a deck and it takes minutes per cut.

Which is why decks fail at the joists and the cut ends rather than across the visible surface. A deck that looks fine on top and is soft where the boards meet the frame is the normal failure pattern, and it is entirely a water management problem.

A slight fall away from the building helps water clear, though a properly gapped deck drains between the boards. What matters more is that water does not sit on the joists.

Do deck boards need to be sealed on the ends?
