Dot grid is the compromise most people actually want from ruled paper: enough structure to keep handwriting level and boxes square, not so much that the page looks like a spreadsheet before you have written anything on it. Set the spacing, set how dark the dots are, print.

What dot grid gives you that lines and squares do not
Ruled paper decides in advance that you are writing sentences. Squared paper decides you are drawing. Dot grid declines to decide, which is why it took over the notebook market in the space of about five years. The dots are enough to keep a line of handwriting level and a hand-drawn box square, and faint enough that a page with a sketch, a table and three paragraphs on it does not look like three different documents fighting.
The practical difference shows up when you draw. On lined paper a hand-drawn box has to ignore the rules, so it looks imposed on the page. On dot grid it snaps to the dots and looks deliberate. Tables are the clearest case: five minutes with a ruler on dot grid produces something that reads as a table, where the same effort on blank paper produces something that reads as an attempt at one.
It also photographs and scans better than any other ruling. A light grey dot at 0.25 mm drops below the threshold of most scanner contrast settings, so a scanned page shows your writing on white with the guide gone. Lines survive scanning; dots mostly do not, and that is a feature.
Matching the spacing to a notebook you already own
Five millimetres is the number to start with. Leuchtturm1917, Rhodia, Moleskine, Dingbats, Scribbles That Matter and Lemome all use it, which is why a spread you copy off Instagram lands correctly in your own book. Archer & Olive is the notable outlier at roughly 5.5 mm, so a layout planned there runs slightly wide anywhere else.
If you are printing sheets to interleave with an existing notebook, measure the book rather than trusting the brand. Take a ruler across ten dots and divide, which averages out any error in reading a single gap. Ten dots spanning 50 mm is 5 mm spacing; spanning 55 mm is 5.5. It takes fifteen seconds and saves printing a stack that does not line up.
For anything other than journalling, spacing choice opens up. Seven or eight millimetres suits people with larger handwriting who find 5 mm cramped. Three or four millimetres is what you want for detailed planning grids and habit trackers where a month has to fit across the page. There is no convention at those sizes, so the only test is whether your own writing fits.
Dot size, colour, and the ink that never quite disappears
The line weight slider sets the dot radius here, and the useful band is narrow. Below about 0.15 mm many inkjets simply skip the dot, producing a page with holes in the grid. Above 0.4 mm the dots stop being a guide and start being a pattern, and they show through under thin ink.
Somewhere between 0.2 and 0.3 mm matches commercial notebooks closely. Combine that with a light grey and the grid does the job of being visible when you look for it and invisible when you look past it, which is the whole design brief.
Colour matters more than people expect. Pure grey works, but a warm grey around the tone of a pencil line sits better under coloured ink and photographs more kindly. Very light blue is the traditional non-photo choice and disappears almost entirely from a black-and-white scan, which is worth knowing if your pages get digitised. Avoid anything saturated: a bright dot grid competes with your own writing for attention and always wins.
Printing sheets that actually sit in a notebook
Most people printing dot grid are not printing loose paper for its own sake. They are filling a disc-bound or ring-bound planner, adding pages to a Traveler's Notebook, or making inserts for a book that has run out. Each of those has a size that is not A4.
For A5 inserts, the honest method is to print two A5 pages onto one A4 sheet using your printer's two-pages-per-sheet option and cut down the middle. That halves the page, and because the browser is already scaling for the layout, the dot spacing halves too. To avoid that, generate at A5 directly and print at 100% onto A5 paper if your printer takes it, or onto A4 and trim.
Punching is where sheets get ruined. Set the margin generously on the side that will be punched, 20 mm rather than 10, so the holes go through white space rather than through the grid. Print one, punch it, check the alignment in the binder, and only then run the rest. This is dull advice and it saves a lot of paper.
The bullet journal use case, without the mystique
Ryder Carroll's method needs almost nothing: a page for an index, spreads for the year and the month, and a daily log where tasks, events and notes get different bullets. Dot grid is the recommended ruling because those spreads involve as much drawing as writing, and because migration, the act of rewriting undone tasks forward, means you draw the same structures repeatedly and want them to line up.
Printing your own has one real advantage over buying a book, which is that you can print the layouts you actually use. A weekly spread on a fresh sheet each week, a habit tracker sized to the number of habits you have this month, a project page with a grid that matches the project. Nobody's pre-printed planner fits, which is why so many of them end up abandoned in February.
The counterargument is fair too: loose sheets scatter, and a bound book you carry beats a folder you leave at home. A reasonable middle is a bound dot grid notebook for daily use and printed sheets for the layouts that need to be exactly right, glued or clipped in where they belong.
