Egg Production Calculator
Feed per dozen, not feed per hen.
Feed per dozen, not feed per hen. Eggs per day, week and year from flock size and lay rate, with feed per dozen, feed conversion, break-even price and margin.
Eggs a day
80
560 a week, 29,200 a year · 1.8 kg of feed a dozen
Feed per dozen is the figure that matters, not feed per hen. A hen eating the same amount and laying less is the whole problem, and it does not show at all in a per-hen number — which is why flocks quietly become unprofitable while the feed bill looks unchanged. Feed is 60 to 70% of the cost of producing an egg in most systems, so feed price and conversion between them decide almost everything. Every other line is rounding by comparison. Lay rate is not constant. It peaks around 90 to 95% at 25 to 30 weeks and declines steadily after, falling sharply in a moult and with day length. An annual figure from a peak-season observation overstates production considerably.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good lay rate?
Commercial flocks peak around 90 to 95% at 25 to 30 weeks. A backyard flock averaging 60 to 70% across a year is doing well, and the annual figure is always below the peak.
How much feed does a laying hen eat?
Around 110 to 130 g a day for a standard brown layer, more in cold weather and for heavier breeds. It barely changes with how much she lays, which is the whole problem.
Why measure feed per dozen rather than per hen?
Because a hen eating the same and laying less is invisible in a per-hen figure. Feed per dozen catches it immediately, and it is where flocks quietly become unprofitable.
What does it cost to produce a dozen eggs?
Feed cost per dozen plus everything else. At 400 a tonne and 1.8 kg of feed a dozen, feed alone is about 0.72 — the rest depends on your own housing, labour and bird cost.
Why do hens stop laying?
Day length below about 14 hours, moulting, age, heat stress, and disturbance. The first is why commercial units light their sheds and backyard flocks go quiet in winter.
