Revolutions per minute and beats per minute are both simply hertz divided by sixty, despite describing very different things. That a 3,000 rpm engine and a 50 Hz mains supply are the same frequency is not a coincidence — synchronous machines were designed around exactly that relationship. Every factor in this family is exact by international agreement rather than measured, so the only rounding is in the display.

How the Frequency Converter works

Frequency across hertz, its multiples, revolutions per minute and beats per minute. All of them are the same quantity — cycles per unit time — which is why rpm is simply hertz times sixty.

Also known as: hz to rpm converter · rpm to hertz · megahertz to gigahertz · beats per minute to hertz

Everything here is cycles per unit time

Hertz, rpm and bpm all describe the same quantity at different scales. Revolutions per minute is simply hertz times sixty, and beats per minute is the same conversion applied to something else entirely.

That a 3,000 rpm machine and a 50 Hz mains supply are the same frequency is not a coincidence. Synchronous motors and generators were designed around exactly that relationship, which is why those numbers recur.

Frequency and period are reciprocals: a 50 Hz signal has a period of 20 milliseconds. Switching between them is often the quickest way to make a timing problem intuitive.

Sampling, aliasing and the Nyquist limit

A sampled signal can only represent frequencies up to half its sampling rate. That is the Nyquist frequency, and it is why CD audio samples at 44.1 kHz to capture the roughly 20 kHz limit of human hearing.

Frequencies above the limit do not disappear — they fold back and appear as lower frequencies, which is aliasing. Anti-aliasing filters exist to remove them before sampling rather than after, because after is too late.

The same effect appears visually. Wagon wheels appearing to turn backwards in film, and LED flicker banding in phone video, are both aliasing between a periodic event and a sampling rate.

Resonance, pitch and bandwidth

Resonance is the large response when a system is driven at its natural frequency. It shatters wine glasses, and it is why bridges and buildings have damping designed in rather than being merely strong.

Musical pitch is logarithmic in frequency: doubling the frequency raises the pitch by an octave. Concert A is conventionally 440 Hz and the octave above is 880, which is why equal temperament divides by ratios rather than differences.

Bandwidth is the range of frequencies a channel carries, and in data it has become synonymous with capacity because for a given encoding the two are proportional. The original meaning is still the literal one.

Where to go next

The Frequency Converter question rarely arrives on its own. These are the ones that usually come with it:

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert rpm to hertz?

Divide by 60, since hertz is cycles per second and rpm is cycles per minute. Three thousand rpm is 50 Hz.

Why is mains electricity 50 or 60 Hz?

Historical engineering choices that became standards. Both work; the split is regional, and equipment designed for one can behave badly on the other — motors run at a different speed, most obviously.

What is the relationship between frequency and period?

They are reciprocals. A 50 Hz signal has a period of 1/50 second, or 20 milliseconds.

What is the range of human hearing?

Roughly 20 Hz to 20 kHz for a young ear, with the upper limit falling steadily with age. Below 20 Hz is felt rather than heard.

How does frequency relate to wavelength?

Wavelength is wave speed divided by frequency. For light in a vacuum that is the speed of light, so higher frequency means shorter wavelength.

What is a gigahertz in a processor?

A billion clock cycles per second. It has stopped being a useful comparison between processors, because how much work happens per cycle varies enormously between designs.

What is the Nyquist frequency?

Half the sampling rate — the highest frequency a sampled signal can represent. It is why CD audio samples at 44.1 kHz to capture up to about 22 kHz.

What is resonance?

The large response when a system is driven at its natural frequency. It is why a wine glass shatters at one pitch and why bridges have damping designed in.

How does frequency relate to musical pitch?

Doubling the frequency raises the pitch by an octave. Concert A is conventionally 440 Hz, and the octave above is 880.

What is bandwidth?

The range of frequencies a channel carries. In data it has become synonymous with capacity, because for a given encoding the two are proportional.

Why do LEDs flicker on camera?

Because many are driven at mains frequency or a multiple of it, and camera shutters sample at a different rate. The beat between the two appears as flicker or banding.

What frequency is Wi-Fi?

Commonly 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, with 6 GHz in newer standards. Higher frequencies carry more data over shorter distances and penetrate walls less well.
