Fuel is about a third of the cost of driving

Fuel is the cost you notice because you pay it at a pump in a single transaction. Depreciation, insurance, servicing, tyres and tax are larger in total and arrive invisibly, spread across the year and buried in unrelated bills.

That is why a statutory per-mile rate sits so far above the fuel cost for the same distance. It is set to cover the whole running cost, which is why it is the honest figure to compare against a train fare when deciding whether to drive at all.

For a trip already committed to, fuel is the right marginal cost — the car exists either way. For deciding between driving and not, the full rate is right. Both are shown here because the two questions get asked interchangeably and have different answers.

Units, and the traps between them

Miles per gallon and litres per 100 km run in opposite directions: higher mpg is better, lower l/100 km is better. The conversion is reciprocal rather than linear, so no fixed factor can be added or subtracted — divide 282.5 by mpg for imperial gallons, or 235.2 for US.

Imperial and US gallons differ by about 20%. A figure quoted in US mpg is roughly a fifth lower than the same efficiency in imperial mpg, which makes cross-border comparisons of vehicle economy misleading unless the unit is stated.

Official economy figures come from standardised test cycles that do not match real driving. Newer test standards narrowed the gap without closing it, and a 10 to 20% real-world shortfall remains normal. Using your own observed figure beats the brochure.

What actually changes consumption

Speed dominates above about 60 mph, because aerodynamic drag rises with the square of speed. Dropping from 80 to 70 mph typically saves a noticeable double-digit percentage on a long motorway run, which is more than most other measures combined.

Roof boxes and roof bars are the next largest and the most easily fixed — often 10 to 25% on a motorway journey. Leaving them fitted between trips is a pure loss, and removing them takes minutes.

Tyre pressure, gentle acceleration and reducing weight all help modestly. Air conditioning costs a few percent, and at motorway speeds open windows cost more in drag than the air conditioning costs in load — which reverses the usual advice above about 45 mph.

How do I calculate the fuel cost of a trip?

Divide the distance by your fuel economy to get the fuel used, then multiply by the price. Three hundred miles at 40 mpg is 7.5 gallons; at £1.50 a litre you need the litre conversion as well, which is why the unit choice matters.

How do I convert mpg to litres per 100 km?
