How the Grade Calculator works

Enter your categories with their weights and the marks you have, leaving the ungraded ones blank. Two answers come back: your grade so far, averaged over the part of the course actually marked rather than over the whole thing, and the mark you need on what is left to finish where you want. If that mark is above 100 the page says so rather than quietly clamping it, because knowing a target is unreachable is worth more than a comforting number.

Frequently asked questions

How is my current grade worked out?

As a weighted average over the categories that have a mark, not over the whole course. Six weeks in you might have been graded on 30 percent of the work, and dividing your marks by the full 100 would report 27 percent for work that has been excellent. Averaging over the graded weight is what every teacher does and what a surprising number of online calculators do not.

What do I need on the final exam?

Enter your target and leave the final blank, and the answer appears. It solves for the mark that makes the weighted total come out at your target, using the weight of everything still ungraded.

It says I need 140 percent. Is that right?

Yes, and it means the target is out of reach. The figure is shown rather than capped at 100 because that is the useful information: it tells you by how much you have missed, and the page also shows the best grade you can still finish on so you can pick a realistic target.

Why do my weights need to add up to 100?

Because the arithmetic assumes the categories describe the whole course. If they total 90 or 110 the page flags it rather than silently rescaling, since the usual cause is a category left out rather than a deliberate choice.

Is the letter scale the same everywhere?

No. The scale here is the common US plus-and-minus one, with A at 93 and A minus at 90, but institutions differ and some put A minus at 91 or D at 65. Check your syllabus before treating a boundary as decisive.
