Lorem ipsum is not invented nonsense. It is a passage from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a work on ethics written in 45 BC, mangled by an unknown printer in the 1500s who cut words apart so the sample would fill a page evenly. The original sentence begins 'Neque porro quisquam est, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet'. Cut 'dolorem' in half and you get the opening everybody recognises.

It survived five centuries because it does its job unusually well. The letter frequencies and word lengths of Latin are close enough to those of English and the other Western European languages that a block of it sits on a page much as real copy will, while being obviously not real copy, so nobody starts editing it by mistake.

That second property is worth more than it sounds. Placeholder text made of repeated English words gets read, and a client who reads your placeholder starts responding to the words instead of the layout.

Why the word list matters

Most lorem ipsum generators draw from a list of a few hundred Latin words with no particular provenance, and the output is subtly wrong in a way that is hard to name. The reason is that texture is the whole point. A paragraph's colour on the page, the density of ascenders and descenders, how often a line breaks awkwardly, all of it comes from the distribution of word lengths and letter frequencies, not from the words being Latin.

The vocabulary here is taken from the Cicero passage and the text around it, and the connective words appear in the list more than once so they come up at roughly the rate they do in the source. The result is that generated paragraphs have the same rhythm as the classic passage rather than reading like a shuffled dictionary, which tends to produce runs of long nouns and no short words to break them.

Sentence length is varied deliberately too, between about six and twenty words. A generator that emits a fixed length produces a right-hand edge too regular to be real, and it is exactly the kind of wrongness that makes a mock-up feel off without anybody being able to say why.

Seeding, and why regenerating is a problem

Most generators produce new text every time the page loads. That seems harmless and quietly costs you work. You take a screenshot of a layout, come back to it the next day, reload, and the text is different: line breaks fall elsewhere, the paragraph that was three lines is now four, and you cannot tell whether the change you are looking at is yours or the generator's.

The output here is seeded, so the same settings always give the same passage. Reload and nothing moves. Press the button and you get a different one on purpose. It is a small thing that makes the tool usable for actual design work rather than only for filling a box.

When not to use it

Lorem ipsum is right for judging type, spacing, measure and rhythm. It is wrong for judging whether a design works, and using it past that point is how designs get signed off that fall apart on contact with real copy.

Real content is never the length you assumed. Headlines run to two lines and then to three. Someone's name is forty characters. A product description is one sentence for half your catalogue and eight paragraphs for the rest. Empty states exist. None of that shows up in evenly-sized blocks of Latin, and all of it shows up on launch day.

The workable habit is to set the page with lorem ipsum, then replace it with the worst real content you can find, the longest name and the shortest description, before anyone approves anything.
