Improper fraction
8/3
2.66666667 as a decimal
A mixed number converts by multiplying the whole part by the denominator and adding the numerator — the whole number is just a count of complete denominators. The result reduces by the greatest common factor, which is why the fraction shown may have smaller terms than the arithmetic produced.

Frequently asked questions
How do I convert a mixed number to an improper fraction?
Multiply the whole number by the denominator, add the numerator, and keep the same denominator. 2⅔ becomes (2 × 3 + 2)/3 = 8/3.
How do I convert back?
Divide the numerator by the denominator. The quotient is the whole part and the remainder is the new numerator: 8/3 gives 2 remainder 2, so 2⅔.
Why use improper fractions at all?
They are far easier to multiply and divide. Mixed numbers read better but resist arithmetic, which is why algebra converts to improper form first.
How do negative mixed numbers work?
The sign applies to the whole quantity, not just the whole-number part. −2⅔ is −8/3, not −2 + ⅔.
