How the Necklace Bead Count Calculator works

Bead count is a division with two subtractions people forget: the clasp takes up finished length without holding any beads, and spacers between beads take up more. Both make the true count lower than length divided by bead size, and on a long strand with small spacers the difference runs to dozens of beads.

Two subtractions people forget

Bead count looks like length divided by bead size, and it is — after two subtractions. The clasp occupies finished length while holding no beads, and spacers occupy length between beads.

Both push the count down, and spacers do it proportionally. A 2 mm spacer between 8 mm beads adds 25% to the length each bead occupies, cutting the count by a fifth. On a design costed bead by bead, that is a real difference in materials.

Beads do not subdivide, so the count always rounds down and the strand finishes slightly under target — which the clasp usually absorbs.

A worked example

An 18 inch necklace of 8 mm beads with a half inch clasp: 17.5 inches of strung length, which is 444.5 mm, divided by 8 gives 55 beads.

Add 2 mm spacers and each bead now occupies 10 mm, so 44 beads and 43 spacers. Eleven fewer beads for the same necklace — worth knowing before buying a strand.

Where the answer misleads

Bead sizes are nominal. A strand of 8 mm gemstone beads commonly varies between 7.5 and 8.5, and natural stone more than that. Count on the strand rather than the label for anything where the length must be exact.

Cord length is a separate calculation and the one that ruins projects. Cut at least six inches longer than the finished piece — three at each end for knotting and findings — and considerably more for knotted-between-beads work, which consumes roughly an extra inch per ten beads.

Finally, hole size limits what cord will pass. A 2 mm hole will not take a doubled 1.5 mm cord, and discovering that after stringing forty beads is a particular kind of frustration.

Subtract the clasp length from the finished length, convert to millimetres, and divide by the bead diameter plus any spacer. An 18 inch necklace of 8 mm beads with a half inch clasp takes 55 beads.

How many 8mm beads are in an inch?

Just over three — 25.4 divided by 8 is 3.175. Because beads do not subdivide, the count always rounds down and the strand comes out slightly under the target unless the clasp takes up the difference.

How much cord should I cut?
