Net worth is assets minus liabilities, and it is the only personal finance number that captures the whole position in one figure. Income says nothing about it: a high earner with a large mortgage and a car loan can have less than someone earning half as much. Value assets at what you could actually realise, not what you paid or what you hope. A car is worth its trade-in price, and an illiquid asset you cannot sell quickly is worth less in practice than its notional value. The direction matters more than the level. Tracking it quarterly shows whether the position is improving, which a single snapshot never can.

How the Net Worth Calculator works

List assets and liabilities for your net worth, debt-to-asset ratio and whether the position is solvent. Income says nothing about this: a high earner with a large mortgage can be worth less than someone earning half as much.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate net worth?

Add everything you own and subtract everything you owe. Property, savings, investments, vehicles on one side; mortgage, loans and card balances on the other.

How should I value my assets?

At what you could realise, not what you paid or hope for. A car is worth its trade-in price. An illiquid asset you could not sell quickly is worth less in practice than its notional value.

Should I include my pension?

Usually yes, since it is money you own even if you cannot access it yet. Some people track it separately because it is not available for current decisions — either is defensible provided you stay consistent.

What is a good net worth?

The wrong question, because it depends entirely on age, country and circumstances. The direction matters far more than the level: tracking it quarterly shows whether things are improving, which a single snapshot never can.
