The combinatorial answer is a multiplication and it is always too high: six tops and four bottoms give 24 pairings only if every top genuinely goes with every bottom, which no real wardrobe achieves. The useful number is that maximum scaled by how well the pieces actually coordinate.

Why adding one piece adds so many outfits
Outfits multiply rather than add. Six tops and four bottoms is 24 pairings; adding a seventh top adds four more outfits, not one, because the new top pairs with every existing bottom. Layers multiply again — and by the number of layer options plus one, since going without a layer is itself an option.
That multiplication is why a small, well-chosen addition can revive a wardrobe that felt exhausted, and why the marginal value of a piece rises as the wardrobe grows rather than falling.
The catch is that the product assumes every combination is wearable, which no real wardrobe achieves. Applying a coordination factor — around 65% for a deliberately built capsule, far less for a wardrobe assembled piecemeal — turns a fantasy number into a usable one.
A worked example
Six tops, four bottoms, two jackets and three pairs of shoes: 6 × 4 × 3 × 3, which is 216 theoretical combinations. At a 65% coordination factor that is about 140 wearable outfits — still more than most people manage to use.
Adding one top takes the theoretical count to 252 and the realistic one to about 164. One garment, roughly 24 more outfits. Whereas raising coordination from 65% to 80% by narrowing the palette adds 32 outfits without buying anything at all.
Where the answer misleads
The coordination factor is a guess, and it is the number that moves the answer most. It also is not constant: the first few pieces of a capsule coordinate almost perfectly, and each addition tends to lower the average as the wardrobe broadens.
Occasion is missing from the model entirely. A hundred and forty combinations that are all casual do not cover a week that includes a wedding and an interview, and counting them as interchangeable overstates what the wardrobe can do.
Finally, more outfits is not automatically better. A wardrobe of 140 combinations where twenty get worn is not more useful than a wardrobe of forty where thirty do. Combinations are capacity, not use.
