The bedding layer under pavers should be a consistent depth, typically 25 to 40 mm, screeded rather than spread — variation in it shows up directly as unevenness in the finished surface. It also should not be used to correct falls in the sub-base, because bedding sand consolidates unevenly under traffic and any level made up with extra sand will move.

Bedding sand is a levelling layer, not a structural one

The sand under pavers exists to give each unit a consistent seat. It should be a uniform screeded depth — typically 25 to 40 mm — and any variation in it shows up directly as unevenness in the finished surface.

It cannot be used to correct falls or dips in the sub-base. Sand consolidates unevenly under traffic, so a level made up with extra bedding settles and dips within a season. Levels are corrected in the compacted sub-base beneath.

The sand must also be sharp rather than soft. Fine building sand holds water and pumps out from under the pavers over time, which is a slow failure that shows as rocking units years after laying.

Compaction, jointing and edge restraint

Pavers are compacted with a plate compactor over a rubber mat after laying, then jointing sand is brushed in and the surface compacted again. Compacting without the mat chips the paver surfaces, which cannot be undone.

Jointing sand is what locks the field together — it transfers load between adjacent units so the surface acts as one. Polymeric jointing sand sets slightly and resists weed growth and washout better, at higher cost.

Every free edge needs restraint. Without it the outer pavers creep outwards under load and the whole field loosens progressively from the perimeter inwards, which is the most common reason a patio goes from tight to rocking.

Falls, frost and efflorescence

A paved area needs a fall of around 1 in 60 to 1 in 80 away from the building. Flat paving ponds, and standing water eventually finds its way under the units and into the bedding, where frost then lifts it.

Laying over concrete is possible but changes the rules — the bedding must be bound rather than loose, and the concrete has to drain. Water trapped beneath a rigid construction has nowhere to go and fails in the first hard frost.

Efflorescence, the white bloom on new paving, is salts brought to the surface as the units dry. It is cosmetic, usually weathers away over months, and washing it off tends to draw more out — patience works better than intervention.
