Percentages commute, which is genuinely useful

x% of y always equals y% of x, because both are xy/100. Fifteen percent of 200 and 200% of 15 are both 30, and the identity holds for every pair.

That makes awkward mental arithmetic easy. Four percent of 75 is hard; 75% of 4 is obviously 3. Sixteen percent of 25 is hard; 25% of 16 is 4. Flipping the calculation costs nothing and frequently makes it trivial.

The mental toolkit alongside it is decomposition: 10% is a tenth, 5% is half of that, 1% is a hundredth. Fifteen percent is 10% plus 5%, which most people can hold in their head without writing anything down.

Percentage points are not percentages

A rise from 10% to 15% is five percentage points and a 50% increase. Both statements are correct and they describe very different magnitudes, which is why the distinction exists.

Reporting frequently blurs it, usually in whichever direction is more dramatic. A tax rate rising from 20% to 22% can honestly be called a two-point rise or a 10% increase, and the second sounds far larger.

Basis points exist to remove the ambiguity entirely in finance. One hundredth of a percentage point, so 25 basis points is a rise from 2% to 2.25% and cannot be mistaken for a 25% rise.

Reversing a percentage

To find the original from a result, divide rather than adding the percentage back. If 30 is 15% of a number, the number is 30 ÷ 0.15 = 200 — not 30 × 1.15.

The same applies to increases. A price of 120 after a 20% rise was 100, found by 120 ÷ 1.2. Subtracting 20% gives 96, which is wrong by 4% and is the single most common percentage error.

Asymmetry follows directly. Falling 50% requires a 100% rise to recover, because the base changed. A stock down 50% must double to get back, which is why losses hurt more than equivalent-sounding gains help.
