Pot volume is calculated from the cylinder and reduced for taper, because pots narrow towards the base and the outside dimensions overstate the soil inside. Watering to a small amount of runoff is what flushes accumulated fertiliser salts, and it is the reason to water thoroughly and less often rather than lightly and daily — shallow watering keeps roots near the surface where they dry out first.

Pot volume is less than the pot looks

Pots taper towards the base, so the cylinder implied by the rim diameter overstates the soil inside — typically by around 20%. Watering calculated from the outside dimensions therefore over-waters, which is the more common failure with houseplants.

The reduction applied here keeps the water quantity proportionate to the actual root zone. It is an approximation, since taper varies by pot, and it is a great deal closer than treating the pot as a cylinder.

Pot material changes the frequency rather than the quantity. Terracotta is porous and dries far faster than glazed ceramic or plastic, so the same plant in the same room needs watering noticeably more often in clay.

Why a little runoff is the target

Water until a small amount runs from the base and two useful things happen. The whole root ball is confirmed wet rather than just the surface, and accumulated fertiliser salts are flushed out rather than concentrating.

Watering that never produces runoff lets those salts build up until they burn the roots — visible as brown leaf tips and a white crust on the soil surface. It is a slow failure that looks like under-watering and gets treated with more frequent light watering, which makes it worse.

Bottom watering, standing the pot in water to wick up, wets the root ball evenly and avoids compacting the surface. It does not flush salts, so an occasional thorough top watering is still needed alongside it.

Over-watering, under-watering and winter

Both cause wilting, which is why they are constantly confused. The distinguishing test is the soil: over-watered soil is wet and the roots are dark and soft; under-watered soil is dry and pulls away from the edge of the pot.

Drainage holes are not optional for most plants. A decorative pot without them should hold an inner pot that has them, so the plant is never standing in water — root rot from a saturated base kills more houseplants than drought does.

Winter changes requirements substantially. Lower light and cooler temperatures slow growth, so the same plant may need a third of its summer water. Continuing a summer schedule into winter is the single most common way houseplants are killed.
