Holiday accrues with service rather than being granted whole at the start of the year. A leaver in month three has earned a quarter of the annual entitlement — not the lot, and not nothing — which is what gets settled in a final payslip. Part-time entitlement is pro-rated by contract fraction, not by days worked. Someone on a three-day week gets three fifths of the full-time allowance, which usually works out as fewer days but the same number of weeks off. Carry-over rules vary by employer and jurisdiction, and many places require a minimum to be taken within the year rather than banked. The excess above the limit is typically lost, which is why the figure is worth watching before year end.
