GPA is credit-weighted, not a flat average of grade points. A four-credit course counts twice as much as a two-credit one, which is why averaging your letter grades directly gives a different — and wrong — answer. Quality points are the intermediate figure: grade points times credits, summed. Institutions track that number rather than the GPA itself, because it adds cleanly across terms while GPAs do not. The standing labels follow common US conventions and are indicative only. Honours cutoffs are set locally and often by class rank rather than an absolute GPA, so a 3.7 that earns honours at one institution may not at another.

How the Semester GPA Calculator works

Calculate a semester GPA from grade points and credits, weighted and unweighted. Credits are the weights — a four-credit course counts twice as much as a two-credit one, which is why averaging your letter grades directly gives the wrong answer.

Frequently asked questions

How is GPA calculated?

Multiply each course's grade points by its credits to get quality points, sum those, and divide by total credits. Averaging the grade points directly ignores credits and gives a different, incorrect figure.

What are quality points?

Grade points times credits for one course. Institutions track the running total because it adds cleanly across terms, while GPAs do not — you cannot average two semesters' GPAs unless the credit loads happened to match.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Weighted GPA adds a bonus, usually a full point, for honours or AP courses, so it can exceed 4.0. Unweighted caps at 4.0 and treats all courses equally. Institutions ask for one or the other, rarely both.

Does a pass/fail course affect my GPA?

Usually not — pass/fail courses typically earn credit without grade points and are excluded from the calculation entirely. A failed pass/fail course sometimes does count as a zero, which is worth checking.

How much can one bad grade hurt?

Proportionally to its credits. A 2.0 in a four-credit course does more damage than a 2.0 in a one-credit one, and the effect shrinks as your total credit count grows — which is why early semesters matter more than later ones.
