Sleep Cycle Calculator
Wake at the end of a cycle, not the middle of one.
Work out Sleep Cycle. Wake at the end of a cycle, not the middle of one. States the assumption instead of hiding it.
Go to bed at — for 6 cycles
9:46 PM
9 hours of sleep
A sleep cycle runs roughly 90 minutes through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Waking at the end of one, in light sleep, avoids the grogginess of being pulled out of deep sleep — which is why five full cycles can leave you feeling better than an awkwardly-timed six and a half hours. Ninety minutes is an average, not your number. Real cycles run from 70 to 120 minutes and lengthen across the night as REM takes a larger share, so treat these times as a guide and adjust the cycle length if you consistently wake feeling wrong. The fall-asleep allowance defaults to fourteen minutes, which is typical for adults sleeping normally. Consistently taking under five minutes is a sign of sleep deprivation rather than of being a good sleeper.
How the Sleep Cycle Calculator works
Bedtimes or wake times that land at the end of a sleep cycle rather than in the middle of deep sleep. Five full cycles can leave you feeling better than an awkwardly-timed six and a half hours, which is the whole point of timing it.

Frequently asked questions
How long is a sleep cycle?
About 90 minutes on average, running through light sleep, deep sleep and REM. Real cycles vary from 70 to 120 minutes between people, and they lengthen across the night as REM takes a larger share.
Why does waking mid-cycle feel so bad?
Because you are being pulled out of deep sleep, which produces sleep inertia — the heavy, disoriented grogginess that can last twenty minutes or more. Waking in light sleep at the end of a cycle avoids it.
How many hours of sleep do I need?
Seven to nine for most adults, which is five to six cycles. Under six hours consistently carries measurable costs to attention, mood and metabolic health, whatever anyone claims about needing less.
How long should it take to fall asleep?
Ten to twenty minutes is typical, and the calculator allows fourteen. Consistently falling asleep in under five minutes is a sign of sleep deprivation rather than of being a good sleeper.
Is it better to wake at a cycle end than to sleep longer?
Within reason, yes — but not at the cost of a lot of sleep. Getting six cycles is better than five, and if the choice is between five cycles and an awkward five and a half, take the five.
