The calculation itself
Area, plus waste, divided by the roll size. Then divided again by the pallet size, because that is the unit that actually arrives on a truck.
Neither divisor is standard. A roll is commonly around ten square feet and a pallet four to five hundred, but every farm cuts and stacks its own way — so both are inputs rather than constants.
In practice
Two thousand square feet with a five percent allowance is 2,100. At ten square feet a roll that is 210 rolls; at 450 to a pallet, five pallets.
Notice the pallet rounding. Five pallets is 2,250 square feet, so you are buying 150 more than you calculated — which is normal, and worth knowing before it looks like an error on the invoice.
The waste allowance is doing more work here than for most materials. Turf waste comes from cutting around beds, trees and paths rather than from breakage, so a rectangular lawn wastes almost nothing and a curved one can easily double the five percent above.
Why the timing matters more than the quantity
Sod is alive and stacked. Rolled turf on a pallet heats up from the middle, and in warm weather it can be dying within a day of being cut.
So the usual advice — order generously, it is cheap insurance — is wrong here. Surplus turf that cannot be laid the same day is waste in a way surplus gravel never is.
Which means measuring carefully is worth more effort for sod than for almost anything else in this cluster, and scheduling delivery for the day you can lay it matters as much as the number.
