14 risers of 6.857″ divide the rise exactly and equally — which is the point, since an unequal riser is the commonest cause of a stair fall. Note there are 13 treads rather than 14: the upper floor serves as the last one.

How the Stair Calculator works

Risers must be equal. An unequal riser is the single commonest cause of a stair fall, because the foot expects the spacing the previous step taught it — which is why codes are strict about it and why this rounds the riser count first and derives the height from it, rather than the other way round. There is also always one fewer tread than riser, since the upper floor is the last tread.

The calculation itself

Divide the total rise by your preferred riser height and round to a whole number. That gives the riser count. Then divide the total rise by that count to get the actual riser height.

The order matters. Rounding the count first and deriving the height from it guarantees equal risers; doing it the other way leaves a short last step.

Treads are always one fewer than risers, because the upper floor is the last tread.

In practice

Eight feet of rise is 96 inches. At a 7-inch preference, 96 ÷ 7 is 13.7, so 14 risers — each exactly 6.857 inches, and 14 × 6.857 reconstructs 96 exactly.

That gives 13 treads. At 10 inches deep the flight occupies 130 inches of floor, or 10 feet 10 inches, which is usually the constraint that decides whether the stair fits at all.

2R + T comes to 23.71 inches, inside the 23 to 26 range builders expect. It is a comfort heuristic rather than a code rule, and stairs outside it tend to feel wrong to walk even when they pass inspection.

Why equal risers matter so much

An unequal riser is the single commonest cause of a stair fall. The foot learns the spacing from the first few steps and stops looking; a riser that differs by even a fraction of an inch is what catches it.

Codes are strict for that reason, typically allowing only about three-eighths of an inch of variation across a whole flight. That is a build tolerance, not a design allowance — the design should be exactly equal.

It is also why the total rise must be measured finished-floor to finished-floor. Measuring to a subfloor and adding flooring later changes every riser in the flight, and usually not by the same amount at top and bottom.

Where the figure deceives

The IRC limits here — a 7¾ inch maximum riser and 10 inch minimum tread — are defaults, and local amendments are common. A stair that fails inspection is an expensive rebuild, so check what applies where you are building.

Headroom is not calculated here and is a frequent failure. Codes generally require about 6 feet 8 inches measured vertically from the tread nosing, and a stair that fits the floor plan can still fail on the ceiling above it.

Nor is this a stringer layout. The run here is tread depth times tread count — how much floor the flight occupies — and nosing overhangs add to the walking surface without adding to that.

Acting on it

Measure finished floor to finished floor, after you know what flooring is going down.

Check the total run against the space available before anything else. A comfortable stair that does not fit is not an option, and the fix is usually a landing rather than steeper steps.

Confirm the local riser and tread limits, and check headroom separately.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate stair risers?

Divide the total rise by your target riser height, round to a whole number, then divide the total rise by that count. That derived height is what you build to, and it will be near but not equal to your target.

Why is there one fewer tread than riser?

Because the upper floor serves as the final tread. Building the tread count equal to the riser count is how a flight ends up projecting a tread's depth further into the room than planned.

What are the code limits?

The International Residential Code caps risers at 7¾ inches and requires treads of at least 10. Local amendments are common, so both are adjustable here — check what applies where you are building.

What is the 2R plus T rule?

Twice the riser plus the tread should land around 24 to 25 inches. It is a comfort heuristic rather than a code requirement, and stairs that violate it tend to feel wrong to walk even when they pass inspection.

Does the total run include the nosing?

The run here is tread depth times tread count, which is the horizontal distance the flight occupies. Nosing overhangs add to the walking surface without adding to the run, so they do not change how much floor the stair takes.
