Decorative mouldings with a repeating pattern need the pattern matched across joins, which adds waste beyond the simple percentage — sometimes a great deal on a bold profile. Pattern repeat is the hidden waste

A plain moulding needs the usual ten percent for cuts and errors. A moulding with a repeating carved or embossed pattern needs the pattern aligned across every join, which effectively makes the repeat length the minimum offcut at each one.

On a bold repeat that can add a great deal. The practical approach is to work out the run in whole repeats rather than in metres, which sometimes changes which length to buy entirely.

It also constrains where joins can go. A join that lands mid-pattern is visible however well cut, so the position is dictated by the repeat rather than by the fixing points — the opposite of the usual constraint.

Scarf joints and long runs

A square butt joint in a long run opens visibly as the timber moves, because the two ends shrink away from each other. A scarf joint — both pieces cut at 45 degrees so they overlap — stays closed, because shrinkage slides the overlap rather than opening a gap.

It should sit over a fixing point and away from the eye line, which usually means positioning it deliberately rather than wherever the length runs out. Planning the joins before cutting is what separates a good run from an obvious one.

The same logic applies to filling. Flexible caulk at the wall line and along a scarf accommodates movement; rigid filler cracks. It is the same reason rigid filler fails above skirting.

Crown moulding, spring angles and coping

Crown moulding sits at an angle between wall and ceiling, so its corners are compound cuts rather than simple mitres. That makes it considerably less forgiving, and the usual difficulty is getting the orientation right in the saw rather than the angle.

The spring angle — commonly 38 or 45 degrees — is the angle at which the moulding sits against the wall. It determines the compound cuts, and mouldings with different spring angles cannot be mixed in one run because their corners will not meet.

Coping works here too and is more forgiving than mitring on internal corners. Cut one piece square into the corner, cope the second to its profile, and out-of-square walls stop mattering — which they otherwise do a great deal.
