Shoe scales measure the last rather than the foot, and makers cut lasts differently, so treat any conversion as a starting point. Brands vary by up to a full size; where a maker publishes its own chart in centimetres, that chart wins.
How the Women's Shoe Size Calculator works
Women's US sizing sits two full sizes above the UK number for the same foot, which is the single largest offset in shoe sizing and the reason so many international orders arrive wrong. Everything else about the scale is shared with men's: the same barleycorn step, the same last-based measurement, the same brand-to-brand drift of up to a size.

How the number is derived
Women's sizing uses the same barleycorn step as men's — a third of an inch per size — and the same last-based measurement. What differs is where the counting starts. Women's US runs two full sizes above the UK number for the same foot, against half a size for men's, and that two-size gap is the largest single offset in shoe sizing.
It is also why women's US and men's US differ by about 1.5 for an identical foot. The two scales are anchored independently; the 1.5 is a consequence of the offsets, not a design.
European sizing sidesteps the gender question entirely. The Paris point scale applies the same numbers to any foot, which is why a European size converts to two different US numbers depending on which department you are shopping in.
A worked example
A 246 mm foot plus the 15 mm allowance is a 261 mm last, or 30.8 barleycorns. Subtracting the adult zero of 25 gives UK 5.8, sold as a 6. Adding the women's offset of two gives a US 7.8, sold as an 8.
The same foot in men's sizing would be a US 6.3. Someone moving between men's and women's ranges — common in trainers, where men's lasts run wider — needs that 1.5 offset, and needs to know the men's last will also be cut wider through the forefoot.
Where the answer misleads
The B width is the women's standard, which means most women's shoes sold without a stated width are cut narrower than the equivalent men's D. For a wide foot this matters more than the length, and it is the reason many women find men's or unisex trainers more comfortable at the equivalent size.
Heel height changes effective fit. A raised heel pushes the foot forward into the toe box, so the same nominal size in a heel and a flat do not fit the same. Sizing up in heels is common and is a fitting response rather than a measurement error.
Finally, women's ranges vary more between brands than men's do, partly because there is more variation in last shape. Converting to centimetres and checking the brand's own chart is more reliable than any cross-brand size table.

Why is my UK size two smaller than my US size?
Because the women's scales start counting from different points. It is a labelling difference, not a fit difference; a UK 6 and a US 8 are the same shoe.
How do I convert to men's sizing?
Subtract about 1.5 from a women's US size. A women's US 9 is close to a men's US 7.5 in length, though men's lasts are cut wider through the forefoot, so the same length can fit quite differently.
What is a B width?
The women's standard, equivalent to a men's D in the sense of being the default. Narrow is AA and wide is D or above, so a women's D is a wide shoe while a men's D is an average one.
