How the grid gets built

Words are placed longest first, which is the single decision that makes the difference between a puzzle that fits and one that does not. Short words find a home almost anywhere, so placing them early consumes exactly the contiguous runs of empty squares that the long words need. Placing long words first and letting short ones fill the gaps succeeds far more often on the same grid size.

For each word, every legal position in every permitted direction is collected, and one is picked at random. Legal means the word fits inside the grid and every square it would occupy is either empty or already holds the same letter. That second condition is what allows words to cross, and crossings are what stop a puzzle looking like a set of parallel stripes.

Anything that finds no legal position at all is reported rather than dropped. A word list where two entries quietly vanished produces a puzzle nobody can finish, and the solver has no way to tell whether the fault is theirs. Shuffling usually rescues a failed placement, since the random choices earlier in the sequence differ; adding two or three squares to the grid nearly always does.

What the difficulty settings actually change

Easy permits two directions, left to right and top to bottom. Every word reads forwards in the direction people naturally scan. This is the right setting for children roughly five to seven, for English language beginners, and for anyone who will give up rather than persist.

Medium adds both diagonals, still running forwards and downwards. Four directions is the level most newspaper and puzzle book word searches use, and it is a genuine step up because diagonal scanning is not something the eye does automatically.

Hard permits all eight, which means words can run backwards, upwards, and diagonally in any direction. The jump in difficulty from four to eight directions is much larger than the numbers suggest, because a solver can no longer rule out a region after scanning it one way. It is the right setting for adults who want a puzzle to last, and cruel for anyone else.

Building a word list that makes a good puzzle

Length variety matters more than word count. A list where everything is six letters produces a bland grid, because every word occupies a similar run and crossings become predictable. Mixing four-letter words with ten-letter ones gives a puzzle with texture, where the long words anchor the grid and the short ones hide in the noise.

Shared letters are your friend. Words with common letters cross more often, which packs the grid tighter and makes the filler letters look less like filler. A themed list usually does this naturally, since related words tend to share roots and letter patterns.

Watch for accidental words. Random filler occasionally produces a real word by chance, and with a class of nine-year-olds this occasionally produces a word you did not want on the sheet. Glance over the grid before printing thirty copies. It takes a few seconds and it is the sort of thing that becomes a story otherwise.

Classroom and therapy uses

Vocabulary reinforcement is the obvious teaching use, and it works because searching for a word means holding its spelling in working memory while scanning, which is closer to real practice than copying it out. Language classes use it for the same reason, and a list of the week's new words makes a five-minute starter activity.

Occupational therapists and speech and language therapists use word searches for visual scanning and attention work, particularly after stroke or brain injury. There the difficulty setting does real work: restricting to one or two directions on a small grid makes the task achievable, and the ability to build a list of personally meaningful words matters more than the puzzle itself.

Dementia care settings use them widely, usually large grids with large letters and short familiar words, often from the person's own history. Being able to set your own word list rather than using a generic puzzle book is the whole point in that context.

Printing, and keeping the key matched to the puzzle

The layout is generated from a seed rather than from fresh randomness on every render, so the same settings always produce the same grid. That is what allows the answer key to be trustworthy: toggling answers on shades the squares of the puzzle you are looking at, not a fresh one that happens to use the same words.

The practical routine is to print the solver copies first with answers hidden, then toggle answers on and print one for yourself. Reload the page later with the same word list and the same seed and you get the identical puzzle back, which matters if a copy goes missing halfway through a lesson.

For younger solvers, print at a larger grid size than feels necessary. A 10 by 10 grid on A4 gives letters big enough for small hands to circle without ambiguity, and ambiguity about whether a word has been found is the fastest route to frustration.

Frequently asked questions

How many words should a word search have?

Ten to fifteen in a 15 × 15 grid is comfortable, and around twenty is the point where placement starts to fail and the letters stop looking random. Younger children do better with eight to ten in a 10 × 10, which keeps the search from turning into a chore.

What grid size should I use?

Match it to your longest word plus a few squares. A 15 × 15 handles most vocabulary lists; anything containing a word over twelve letters wants 18 or more. The tool flags words that cannot physically fit rather than truncating them.

Why did one of my words not get placed?

Placement is greedy, so a crowded grid occasionally runs out of legal positions for a late word. Shuffling the layout usually finds a fit on the next attempt, and increasing the grid by two or three squares nearly always does.

Can I include phrases or hyphenated words?

Spaces, hyphens and apostrophes are stripped before placing, so 'ice cream' becomes ICECREAM in the grid and appears that way in the word list. That is how printed puzzles handle it too, though it is worth telling younger solvers.

Do words overlap each other?

Yes, wherever the shared letter agrees. Overlaps are what stop a puzzle looking like a set of parallel stripes, and they make it meaningfully harder because finding one word no longer eliminates a whole region.

How do I print the answer key separately?

Print once with answers hidden for the solvers, then toggle them on and print a single copy for yourself. Both use the same seeded layout, so the key always matches the puzzle you handed out.
