Adyen Fee Calculator
Interchange plus plus, and when it wins.
Calculate Adyen's interchange-plus-plus cost per transaction and compare it against blended flat-rate pricing.
Processor pricing varies by country, card type and whatever you negotiated, and it changes without much notice. Take the real figures from your own statement. These defaults are a starting point, not your account.
Adyen cost per transaction
€0.52
0.57% against 3.23% blended
Interchange plus plus saves €2.39 per transaction here, €143,640 a year at this volume. The saving is real but the cost becomes unpredictable, because it moves with your card mix rather than sitting at a fixed rate. Regulated European debit is where the model wins most.
How the Adyen Fee Calculator works
Adyen charges you the actual interchange, the actual scheme fee and a small fixed processing fee. That is cheaper than a blended rate whenever your card mix is favourable, and unpredictable, because the cost now moves with which cards your customers happen to use.

The arithmetic
Adyen prices on interchange plus plus: interchange at cost, scheme fees at cost, and a fixed processing fee per transaction plus a payment method markup. Cost = interchange + scheme fees + $0.12 + method markup.
The fixed processing fee per transaction is the distinguishing feature. It makes Adyen inexpensive at higher order values and comparatively costly on small ones.
How that looks in practice
A $58 transaction with interchange at 1.80% + $0.10 ($1.14), scheme fees at 0.13% ($0.08), the fixed processing fee ($0.12) and a card markup of around 0.60% ($0.35): total $1.69, an effective 2.91%.
Against a flat 2.9% + $0.30, $1.98, Adyen saves $0.29 on this order.
On a $340 order the gap widens sharply: Adyen costs roughly $8.35 against $10.16 flat rate. On a $12 order it narrows to almost nothing, because the interchange fixed component and the processing fee dominate.
Where this breaks down
Adyen has historically applied a monthly minimum invoice, which makes it unsuitable below a certain volume regardless of how good the per-transaction economics look.
The pricing also requires understanding interchange to evaluate, because the largest component varies by card. A business cannot know its Adyen cost without knowing its card mix.
What this changes
Estimate the cost from your actual card mix rather than a single assumed interchange rate. The debit-to-premium-credit split moves the answer by more than the markup does.
Then check the monthly minimum against your volume. Interchange plus plus pricing is only worth having if you process enough for the transparency to save more than the minimum costs.
Why enterprise processors price this way
Interchange plus plus exposes every component, which suits a merchant large enough to have someone who reads the detail and small enough differences to matter at their volume. It also aligns incentives: the processor's revenue is the markup, not the spread.
Flat rate exists because most merchants do not want that detail and will pay a premium for one predictable number. Neither model is dishonest; they serve different buyers.
The transition point is usually where a business hires or contracts someone whose job includes payment costs. Below that, the time cost of managing interchange plus plus exceeds the saving; above it, the saving is real and compounds with volume.
Interchange plus plus produces a settlement report with far more detail than a flat-rate one, and that detail is only useful if something consumes it. A business that files the report without reading it is paying for transparency it never uses.
The specific thing worth reading is the interchange category breakdown, which shows how many transactions downgraded to a more expensive category and why. Those downgrades are frequently fixable: missing address data, delayed capture, incomplete commercial card fields, and each fix is a permanent reduction rather than a one-off saving.
That feedback loop is the real argument for the pricing model, and it is what a flat rate structurally cannot give you: under a bundled rate, a downgraded transaction costs the processor money and costs you nothing visible, so nobody ever fixes it.

Frequently asked questions
What is interchange plus plus?
Pricing where interchange and scheme fees are passed through at cost and the processor adds a stated margin, in Adyen's case usually a fixed amount per transaction rather than a percentage.
When does it beat a flat rate?
At volume, and especially with regulated European debit where interchange is capped very low. A flat 2.9% on a card whose real interchange is 0.2% is enormously profitable for the processor and expensive for you.
What is the drawback?
Forecasting. Your cost per transaction now depends on your customers' card mix, which you do not control. Statements are also considerably more complex to reconcile.
Is there a volume minimum?
Adyen targets larger merchants and typically applies minimum monthly invoices. Below that scale the model rarely makes sense even when the per-transaction maths looks favourable.
