By size tier, determined from the packaged dimensions and weight, then by weight within that tier. Above the base weight, extra pounds are charged per pound or part thereof — so partial pounds cost a full pound.
How do I get into a cheaper tier?
Reduce packaged dimensions, since tiers are defined by both size and weight. Flatter packaging, thinner inserts and eliminating void fill regularly move a product a whole tier, which is worth more than any weight saving.
Does Amazon measure my product itself?
Yes. Fulfilment centres measure and weigh received units, and their measurement is what you are billed on. It often differs from the supplier's spec sheet, so check the fee preview after your first shipment lands.
What is the apparel surcharge?
Some categories carry additional per-unit fees on top of the standard fulfilment fee. Apparel and dangerous goods are the common ones, and they are easy to miss when modelling a new category.
