Frame size gets you to the range

The traditional formula is inseam times a factor by discipline — about 0.665 for road, 0.6 for mountain, 0.635 for hybrid. It reflects seat tube length, which is what frames were sized by for decades.

Modern geometry has moved on. Stack and reach — the vertical and horizontal distance from bottom bracket to head tube — describe fit far better and are comparable between manufacturers in a way seat tube length is not.

Mountain frames are sized smaller for standover clearance, since an abrupt dismount on rough ground is a real possibility. Contemporary trail geometry has also lengthened reach, so riders take shorter seat tubes than they once would.

Saddle height matters more

Inseam times 0.883, measured from the bottom bracket along the seat tube, is the long-standing starting point. Adjust by feel from there — a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the stroke.

Too high shows as rocking hips, pointed toes and pain behind the knee. Too low shows as pain at the front of the knee. Both are common and both are fixed with a hex key in two minutes.

It matters more than frame size because it is what determines the pedalling position, and it can be adjusted on any frame within a size or two of correct. Frame size mostly determines whether the adjustment range is available.

Fit, and what it is worth

A professional fitting adjusts saddle fore-aft and height, stem length, bar height and cleat position against your body and flexibility. For anyone riding regularly it returns more comfort and power than most component upgrades.

Stem length is the cheapest meaningful adjustment — a longer stem stretches the rider and slows the steering, a shorter one does the reverse. Changing it is a ten-minute job and it transforms how a bike feels.

Between two sizes, the smaller frame is more manoeuvrable and easier to adjust upward; the larger is more stable and harder to shrink. A test ride settles it far better than any chart, which is why manufacturers publish geometry tables and shops keep demo bikes.
