Longer skis are more stable at speed and harder to turn; the trade is the whole of ski sizing. Weight matters as much as height and is left out of most charts: a heavier skier flexes a given ski more, so needs more length to get the same stiffness underfoot. Rocker profile changes the effective edge in contact with the snow, so a heavily rockered ski is skied longer than a traditional camber ski of the same nominal length.

Why height alone is not enough

Height sets a baseline — roughly chin height for a beginner up to forehead or above for an advanced skier. Ability, terrain and weight all move it, and the range for one skier can be 15 cm or more.

Weight is the factor most charts omit and it matters as much as height. A heavier skier flexes a given ski more, so needs additional length to achieve the same effective stiffness underfoot; a lighter skier needs less.

Ability moves it because shorter skis turn more easily and are more forgiving, at the cost of stability at speed. A beginner is not using the stability and is very much using the forgiveness.

Terrain and float

Powder skis run longer and wider because float depends on surface area. Length and width both contribute, and modern powder skis achieve most of it through width rather than the extreme lengths once used.

Piste skis run shorter and narrower for quickness edge to edge, which is what carving on hard snow demands. The two requirements pull in opposite directions, which is why all-mountain skis are a genuine compromise rather than a marketing category.

Rocker complicates the arithmetic. Upturned tip or tail lifts part of the ski clear of the snow, so the effective edge in contact is shorter than the nominal length — which is why a heavily rockered ski is skied longer than a traditional camber one.

The things that matter more than length

Binding release setting is a safety matter and must be set by a technician against weight, height, age, boot sole length and ability. A wrongly set binding is a genuine injury risk in both directions.

Edge and base condition change how a ski performs more than most skiers expect. Sharp edges and a waxed base transform a ski that felt unresponsive, and both degrade over a few days of skiing.

For anyone below advanced level, renting is the better answer. Ability changes fast, sizing follows it, and a ski bought at one level is outgrown within a season or two — which is expensive learning.
