Frequently asked questions

How much bleed do I need?

An eighth of an inch or 3mm is the common standard. Some printers ask for more on large format, and their specification always wins over the convention.

What is the safe margin?

The distance inside the trim within which nothing important should sit. A quarter of an inch is typical, more on products with a fold or a binding.

Why does trimming vary?

Because cutting a stack of paper has mechanical tolerance. The cut lands within a fraction of a millimetre of the line, and that fraction is why bleed exists.

Do digital products need bleed?

No, nothing is cut. Bleed is purely a physical printing concern, and adding it to a screen design just crops your artwork.
