Why bleed exists
Printing and cutting are separate operations with separate tolerances. Sheets shift slightly as they feed, and guillotines cut through a stack where the lower sheets move relative to the upper ones.
The result is that a cut can land a millimetre or two either side of the intended line. If the artwork stopped exactly at that line, a cut falling outside it leaves a white sliver along the edge.
Bleed solves it by extending the artwork past the trim so that any cut within tolerance still lands on printed area. It is discarded, which is the point: it exists to be cut off.
The three lines on a print file
Trim is where the piece is intended to be cut, and it defines the finished size. Bleed is outside it, typically 3 millimetres in Europe and 0.125 inches in the US. Safe area is inside it, usually 3 to 5 millimetres in from the trim.
Everything that must survive goes inside the safe area. Text, logos and anything with a defined edge that would look wrong if trimmed close.
Anything that should reach the edge extends to the bleed line. Backgrounds, full-page images, colour blocks. Stopping them at the trim line is the most common file preparation error and it produces exactly the white sliver bleed was invented to prevent.
How much bleed for what
Three millimetres is the general standard for sheet-fed work: business cards, flyers, brochures. It handles ordinary guillotine tolerance comfortably.
Five millimetres or more is common for larger format and for anything where the cut is less precise. Some suppliers specify more for particular finishing processes.
Bound work needs additional allowance on the binding edge. Perfect binding and saddle stitching both consume some of the inner margin, and the amount depends on the page count. A booklet designed with equal margins throughout will look wrong once bound, with the inner margin visually narrower than the outer.
Creep in saddle-stitched work
A saddle-stitched booklet is folded sheets nested inside each other, so the inner pages project slightly further than the outer ones. Trimming the fore edge cuts more from the inner pages than the outer.
The effect is called creep or push-out and it grows with page count and paper thickness. On a thin booklet it is negligible; on a thick one it can be several millimetres.
The correction is to shift page content progressively towards the spine on the inner pages, which layout software will calculate given the page count and stock. Ignoring it on a thick booklet means the inner pages lose more from the fore edge, and page numbers positioned near it can disappear entirely.
Checking a file before it goes
The checks worth making are few and catch most problems. Document size equals trim plus bleed on all sides. Artwork that should bleed actually extends to the bleed line. Nothing important within the safe area margin. Correct colour mode. Fonts embedded or outlined. Images at adequate resolution at final size.
Exporting a PDF with crop marks and bleed marks makes most of these visible at a glance, which is why suppliers ask for it.
A printed proof catches everything else. For a short run it can cost as much as the job; for a long one it is trivial insurance. The rule of thumb is that any job where a reprint would hurt is a job that justifies a proof.

Do digital products need bleed?
No, nothing is cut. Bleed is purely a physical printing concern, and adding it to a screen design just crops your artwork.
