The first year of a cat's life counts for about fifteen human years and the second for another nine, after which each year is roughly four. A two-year-old cat is a young adult of 24, which the seven-times rule puts at 14 — an age at which no cat has ever raised a litter. These figures follow the joint AAFP and AAHA feline life stage guidelines, which vets use to decide when to change diet, screening and vaccination schedules. The stage matters more clinically than the equivalent age does. Indoor cats routinely reach 15 to 20; outdoor cats average considerably less, with road traffic and infectious disease accounting for most of the gap. Why is the first year worth so much?
Because a cat reaches full size and sexual maturity within it. By twelve months a cat can raise a litter, which places it developmentally somewhere in the mid-teens for a human rather than at seven.
