The multiply-by-seven rule has no scientific basis and is wrong in a specific, predictable direction. A one-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a human of 31, not 7 — dogs reach full sexual maturity and adult size inside a year, which no seven-year-old human has done. The figure here comes from Wang and colleagues (2020), who compared DNA methylation patterns in Labradors and humans and found the relationship is logarithmic: about 16 × ln(age) + 31. Ageing is front-loaded and then slows markedly. Size adjusts the result because large breeds age faster and die younger, which is the opposite of the pattern across species and still not fully explained. A Great Dane at eight is old; a Chihuahua at eight is middle-aged.
