Water at 4 °C has a density of almost exactly 1 g/cm³, which is not an accident — the gram was originally defined as the mass of a cubic centimetre of water. The kilogram was later redefined against an artefact and then against fundamental constants, which is why the relationship is now very close rather than exact.

Water at 1 g/cm³ was designed that way

The gram was originally defined as the mass of one cubic centimetre of water at its densest. That is why water sits at almost exactly 1 g/cm³ — it is a historical definition rather than a coincidence.

The kilogram was later redefined against a physical prototype and, since 2019, against the Planck constant. Each redefinition kept the value as close as measurement allowed, so the relationship is now very close rather than exact.

It makes specific gravity — density relative to water — a dimensionless number that happens to equal the density in g/cm³. Anything below 1 floats on water and anything above sinks, which is the whole of Archimedes' principle in one number.

Why ice floats

Water expands as it freezes, making ice about 9% less dense than the liquid. Almost every other substance contracts on freezing and its solid sinks in its own melt.

The cause is hydrogen bonding, which forces water molecules into an open lattice as they crystallise. The lattice occupies more space than the jostling liquid does.

The consequence is that lakes freeze from the top down, leaving liquid water beneath — which is why aquatic life survives winter at all. It is one of the more consequential anomalies in chemistry.

Bulk density and why it is not the material's density

Granular materials have two densities: the true density of the material and the bulk density including the air between grains. Sand's true density is around 2,650 kg/m³ and its bulk density around 1,600.

Bulk density is what matters for buying, because that is what fills a truck. It also varies with moisture and compaction, which is why a supplier's figure is more useful than a textbook one.

The gap explains why a cubic metre of sand weighs far less than a cubic metre of solid quartz, and why compacting a material changes its bulk density without changing what it is made of.

What is the density of water?

What is specific gravity?

Density relative to water, so it is dimensionless. A specific gravity of 2.5 means two and a half times as dense as water, and anything below 1 floats on it.

Multiply by 1,000. The two units share the same numerical relationship as grams to kilograms and centimetres to metres, which happen to cancel to a factor of a thousand.

How does Archimedes' principle work?

A submerged object displaces its own volume of fluid and experiences an upward force equal to the displaced fluid's weight. Comparing that to the object's weight determines whether it floats.

What is the densest naturally occurring element?

Osmium, at about 22.6 g/cm³, with iridium essentially tied. A litre of either weighs more than a full domestic gas cylinder.

Why does oil float on water?

Because it is less dense — typically 0.85 to 0.95 g/cm³ against water's 1.0 — and because the two do not mix. Both conditions are needed for a stable layer.

How is density used in brewing?

Specific gravity readings before and after fermentation show how much sugar was converted to alcohol. The whole ABV calculation rests on a density measurement.

What is bulk density?

The density of a granular material including the air between the grains, which is far below the material's true density. It is why sand and gravel are sold by bulk density rather than solid density.

Does salt water density matter for swimming?

Yes — seawater is about 2.5% denser than fresh, which is enough to make floating noticeably easier. The Dead Sea, far saltier again, makes sinking essentially impossible.
