The pound has been exactly 0.45359237 kilograms since 1959, which makes every imperial mass unit an exact multiple of the kilogram. Note that a US ton is 2,000 pounds and an imperial ton is 2,240 — a 12% difference that catches shipping calculations constantly. Every factor in this family is exact by international agreement rather than measured, so the only rounding is in the display.

How the Weight Converter works

Mass between metric and imperial units. The pound is exactly 0.45359237 kg by definition, which makes every imperial mass unit an exact multiple of the kilogram.

Mass, weight and what a scale measures

Mass is the amount of matter and does not change with location. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, and it does. A bathroom scale measures force and reports mass, which works because gravity barely varies on Earth.

The distinction becomes real off Earth. A 70 kg person has 70 kg of mass everywhere and weighs about 686 newtons on Earth and 114 on the Moon. The scale would read differently; the mass would not have changed.

It also explains kilogram-force as a unit. It is the weight of a kilogram under standard gravity — a force of 9.80665 newtons — which is why it is a force unit despite carrying a mass unit's name.

The tons that are not the same

A US short ton is 2,000 pounds, an imperial long ton is 2,240, and a metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. That is roughly 907, 1,016 and 1,000 kilograms — three different quantities sharing one word.

The 12% gap between the two imperial tons catches shipping and freight calculations constantly, and the tonne sitting between them means no single approximation works for both.

The hundredweight has the same problem: 112 pounds imperial and 100 pounds US. Both are largely obsolete outside agriculture, and both appear in old records where the difference is not signposted.

Troy, avoirdupois, and the kilogram's redefinition

Precious metals use troy weight: a troy ounce is about 31.1 grams against the ordinary avoirdupois ounce's 28.35, and there are twelve troy ounces to a troy pound rather than sixteen. It is a genuinely separate system.

Carat compounds the confusion. For gemstones it is exactly 200 milligrams; for gold purity, karat is parts per twenty-four of pure metal. Same-sounding word, entirely different quantity.

The kilogram itself was redefined in 2019 in terms of the Planck constant, replacing the platinum-iridium prototype in Paris. The prototype had been drifting relative to its official copies, which is an unacceptable property for a standard of mass.

Frequently asked questions

How many pounds in a kilogram?

About 2.20462. The exact relationship runs the other way: a pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, defined in 1959.

What is the difference between a US ton and an imperial ton?

A US or short ton is 2,000 pounds; an imperial or long ton is 2,240. That is a 12% difference, and it catches shipping and freight calculations constantly.

How many pounds in a stone?

Exactly 14. The stone is used for body weight in Britain and Ireland and almost nowhere else, which is why it appears on some scales and not others.

What is a metric tonne?

Exactly 1,000 kilograms, about 2,205 pounds. It sits between the US short ton and the imperial long ton, which is a further reason to state which ton is meant.

Is weight the same as mass?

Strictly no — mass is the amount of matter and weight is the force gravity exerts on it. A bathroom scale measures force and reports mass, which works because gravity is nearly constant on Earth.

How many ounces in a pound?

Sixteen avoirdupois ounces, which is the ordinary kind. Troy ounces, used for precious metals, are heavier and there are twelve to a troy pound — a genuinely different system.

How was the kilogram redefined?

In 2019, in terms of the Planck constant rather than a physical prototype. The platinum-iridium cylinder in Paris had been drifting relative to its copies, which is a poor property for a standard.

What is a troy ounce?

A unit for precious metals, about 31.1 grams against the ordinary avoirdupois ounce's 28.35. There are twelve to a troy pound, which makes it a genuinely separate system.

What is a carat?

For gemstones, exactly 200 milligrams. For gold purity, karat is a different thing entirely — parts per twenty-four of pure gold — and the two are constantly confused.

How much does a litre of water weigh?

One kilogram, near enough, at 4 °C. The relationship was the original definition of the kilogram and survives as a very close approximation.

What is a hundredweight?

112 pounds imperial and 100 pounds US, which is exactly the kind of divergence that makes the ton ambiguous too. Both are largely obsolete outside agriculture.

Why do recipes in different countries use different units?

American recipes use volume, most others use weight. Weight is more accurate for dry ingredients, which is why professional baking uses it regardless of country.
