Sit-and-reach is dominated by hamstring and lower back length. It is also confounded by limb proportions — someone with long arms relative to their legs scores better at identical tissue flexibility — which is why it tracks change in one person well and compares between people poorly. Flexibility is joint-specific. Scoring well here says very little about shoulder or hip rotation, and there is no such thing as being generally flexible in a way one test can capture. What does the sit-and-reach test measure?
Mostly hamstring and lower back length. It is the most widely used field test of flexibility, largely because it needs a box and a ruler rather than a laboratory.
Why can a negative score be normal?
Because zero is the toes, not the floor. Not reaching your toes is a negative number and is common in adults who sit for a living — it is a starting point, not a failure.
Does the test compare fairly between people?
Not well. Someone with long arms relative to their legs scores better at identical tissue flexibility, so the test tracks change within one person far better than it ranks between people.
Does flexibility in one joint mean flexibility everywhere?
