Why area alone does not give the answer
Grout fills the joints, and the joint volume depends on joint width, joint depth and how many joints there are — which is set by tile size. Small tiles with wide joints can use several times what a large format with narrow joints does over the same floor.
Depth is the part most often forgotten. The joint is filled for the full tile thickness, so a 10 mm tile takes twice the grout of a 5 mm tile at the same joint width. Quantity charts that quote coverage per square metre must be read against a stated tile size.
Joint width itself is not free choice. Rectified tiles with precise edges take 2 to 3 mm; less precisely made tiles need 3 to 5 mm to absorb size variation between units, and forcing them tighter makes the variation visible as wavering joint lines.
Sanded, unsanded and epoxy
Sanded grout is used above about 3 mm, where the sand resists shrinkage cracking as the grout cures. Unsanded is for narrow joints and for polished stone, where sand would scratch the surface during application.
Epoxy grout needs no sealing, resists staining and chemicals, and is considerably harder to work with — it sets fast and removing cured epoxy from a tile face is very difficult. It suits wet areas and commercial work more than a first tiling job.
Cement-based grout is porous and benefits from sealing in wet areas, which has to be redone periodically. That ongoing maintenance is the trade against epoxy's difficulty, and it is a genuine consideration in a shower.
Cracking, colour and the haze
Grout cracks because it is rigid and something moved. A flexing substrate, a large field with no movement joints, or a wall-to-floor junction grouted rather than sealed will all crack — and regrouting the same joint solves nothing.
Colour variation between areas is almost always inconsistent water in the mix between batches, or grouting over adhesive that had not fully cured so moisture varied across the floor. Both are permanent once set.
Haze is removed with a damp sponge while fresh, and with a proprietary remover once set. Textured tiles hold it far more stubbornly than smooth ones, which is worth knowing before choosing a heavily textured tile with contrasting grout.

How long before I can walk on it?
Usually 24 hours for light foot traffic and longer before wetting, though it varies by product. Grouting too soon after tiling traps moisture in the adhesive beneath.
Should grout match or contrast with the tile?
A matching grout makes the surface read as one field; a contrasting one emphasises the grid. Practically, mid-tones show dirt least — white grout on a floor is the hardest to keep looking new.
How do I clean grout haze?
A damp sponge while the grout is still fresh removes most of it, and a proprietary haze remover handles what sets. Leaving it too long makes it far harder, particularly on textured tiles.
Can I grout over old grout?
Only if enough old grout is removed to give a meaningful depth for the new — typically at least 2 mm. A thin skim over existing grout will not bond and will fail quickly.
