Why the spare box matters more than the calculation

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are fired in batches, and colour varies measurably between production runs. A box bought two years later to replace a cracked tile will not match the floor, however carefully the product code is matched.

So the practical rule is to buy at least one box beyond the calculation and keep it dry and labelled. It costs a fraction of what relaying or patching a mismatched floor does, and it lasts as long as the installation.

This is also why buying tightly against the calculation is a false economy. Running short mid-job means either a batch mismatch or a delay while the same batch is sourced, and the second is not always possible.

Layout decides waste more than area does

A straight lay produces rectangular offcuts, and the piece cut from one end of a row often fits the other end. A diagonal lay produces triangles, and almost none of them fit anywhere — which is why the waste allowance roughly doubles.

Starting point matters as much. Setting out from the centre of the room puts equal cuts at opposite walls; starting from a wall leaves a full tile at one edge and a sliver at the other, which is the most visible layout mistake there is.

Large formats add their own problem. Each perimeter cut discards more material, and they demand a much flatter substrate — a floor that would carry 150 mm tiles happily will show every deviation under a 600 mm one, and lippage between tiles is the result.

Movement, substrate and the failures that appear later

Tiles and grout are rigid and brittle, and every substrate moves. A timber floor deflects under load, a new concrete slab shrinks as it cures, and both put the tile bed in tension that it cannot take.

That is what an uncoupling membrane addresses — a layer that lets the substrate move without transferring that movement to the tiles. It is standard practice over timber and over anything that may still be curing.

Movement joints do the same job at a larger scale. Any large tiled area, and every junction with a wall or a change of substrate, needs a flexible sealant joint rather than grout. Omitting them is what makes tiles tent and lift years after they were laid perfectly.

Should I lay tiles from the centre or the wall?

From the centre, so cuts are equal on opposite sides. Starting at a wall puts a full tile at one edge and a sliver at the other, which is the most visible layout error.

What substrate do floor tiles need?

Something flat, rigid and dry. Deflection is what cracks tiles and grout, so a timber floor usually needs overboarding or an uncoupling membrane before large-format tiles.

What is an uncoupling membrane?

A layer that lets the substrate move slightly without transferring that movement to the tiles. It is the standard answer for tiling over timber or over a floor that may still be curing.

How long should adhesive cure before grouting?

Usually 24 hours, longer in cold or humid conditions. Grouting too early traps moisture in the adhesive and can leave patchy grout colour permanently.

Do I need movement joints?

In any large tiled area, and at every junction with a wall or a change of substrate. They are flexible sealant rather than grout, and omitting them is what makes tiles tent and lift years later.

How do I cut tiles around a pipe?

A hole saw for the circle, then cut through to the edge and glue the two pieces back together around the pipe. The join is hidden by the escutcheon plate.
