Comparing oil against gas and electricity
Fuels are only comparable on cost per unit of energy. Heating oil holds about 10.35 kWh per litre, so 75p a litre is roughly 7.2p per kWh of fuel. That is the figure to set against a gas or electricity tariff, not the price per litre.
Boiler efficiency then applies on top. A boiler running at 85% delivers 85% of that energy as useful heat, so the real cost of heat in the room is 7.2p ÷ 0.85 = about 8.5p per kWh. Old boilers can sit well below 80%, which moves the comparison considerably.
