Naismith's rule allows an hour per 5 km plus an hour per 600 m of ascent, and it assumes a fit walker on good ground with a light pack in good conditions. Every one of those assumptions can fail. Rough ground, a heavy pack, poor visibility, snow or a large group can each add half again — and the rule ignores descent, which slows you on anything steep. Treat the answer as a minimum rather than an estimate.

Naismith's rule and what it assumes
An hour per 5 km plus an hour per 600 m of ascent, published in 1892 and still the standard starting point. It is a remarkably durable piece of arithmetic.
The assumptions are specific: a fit walker, on good ground, with a light pack, in good conditions, over a reasonable distance. Every one of them can fail, and each failure adds time.
Rough terrain, a heavy pack, poor visibility, snow, navigation stops or a large group can each add half again — and they combine. Which is why the output should be read as a minimum rather than an estimate.
What Naismith leaves out
Descent, entirely. Steep descent is slower than level walking and considerably harder on the knees, and on a route with substantial down as well as up the omission matters. A modest penalty is added here for that reason.
Fatigue is the other. Tranter's correction adjusts Naismith for fitness and for accumulated tiredness, and it slows the estimate substantially for the later hours of a long day and for less fit walkers.
Group size compounds both. A group moves at its slowest member's pace, stops more often, and adds coordination time at every decision point. Doubling a party can add a third to the day, which no distance-and-ascent rule captures.
Planning against daylight
A walk that finishes exactly at sunset in a planning estimate finishes in the dark in practice, because the estimate was a minimum. Building a margin against daylight is the single most useful planning habit.
A turnaround time — the hour at which you head back regardless of progress — is the mechanism that makes it real. Committing to it in advance is what stops summit fever overriding it later.
Weather multiplies the risk rather than adding to it. Wind, rain, snow and poor visibility each slow a party meaningfully and together can halve the pace, at exactly the point when finishing in daylight matters most.

What is the difference between moving time and elapsed time?
Moving time excludes stops; elapsed is the whole day. GPS watches report both, and the gap is frequently larger than people expect — an hour on a long walk is normal.
How does group size affect pace?
Considerably. A group moves at its slowest member's pace and stops more often, and each additional person adds coordination time. Doubling a group can add a third to the day.
Does a heavy pack slow you down?
Substantially on ascent, less on the flat. A pack at 20% of body weight can add a quarter to the climbing time, which Naismith does not account for.
What is the effect of altitude on walking pace?
Above about 2,500 m, noticeable and increasing. Reduced oxygen slows sustainable pace considerably, and acclimatisation matters more than fitness at that point.
How do I plan a turnaround time?
Work backwards from the time you must be off the hill and commit to turning around then regardless of progress. Summit fever combined with fading daylight is behind a large share of mountain incidents.
Should I plan for the weather slowing me down?
Yes — wind, rain, snow and poor visibility each slow a party meaningfully, and together they can halve the pace. A plan that only works in good conditions is not a plan.
