A standard 2440 × 1220 mm sheet covers 2.98 m² nominally and rather less in practice, because sheets have to break on a support. That constraint usually drives the count more than the area does — a 3 m run needs two sheets even though the area says one and a bit.

Sheets break on supports, not where the area ends
The arithmetic says a 3 m run at 1.2 m sheet width takes two and a half sheets. The site says it takes three, because the half sheet has to end over a joist or a stud rather than in mid-air.
That constraint is what makes sheet material counts higher than area suggests, and it is why joist and stud spacings of 400 and 600 mm persist — a standard 1,200 mm sheet lands on both, so every edge falls on a support without cutting.
Choosing a non-standard spacing means cutting every sheet to land on a member, which wastes both material and a great deal of time. The spacings are a convention that exists to make the sheets work.
Plywood, OSB and what the grades mean
Plywood is cross-laminated veneers, which gives it good fixing retention and reasonable edge stability. OSB is compressed oriented strands, cheaper and structurally comparable for sheathing, and noticeably worse at holding a screw near an edge.
Plywood grades describe the face veneers, usually a letter per face. A is smooth and defect-free, C and D have knots and open voids. A BC sheet has one good face and one rough — which is fine where only one side shows.
Marine grade is widely misunderstood. Exterior plywood already uses waterproof adhesive; marine grade adds better veneer quality and fewer internal voids. For most outdoor work exterior grade is adequate, and the price difference is substantial.
Edges, gaps and squeaks
Edges absorb far more moisture than faces, because the end grain of every veneer is exposed. Sealing cut edges on any exterior work is the single most effective step against delamination, and it takes minutes.
Sheets also need an expansion gap, usually 2 to 3 mm. Timber-based boards move with humidity, and sheets butted tight buckle when they take up moisture — a floor that develops a ridge along a joint was fitted without one.
Squeaks come from a sheet moving against a fixing rather than from the fixing being loose. Gluing the sheet to the joist as well as screwing it largely eliminates them, and it stiffens the floor measurably. Adding more nails to a squeaking floor rarely works.

How many sheets of plywood do I need?
Divide the net area by the coverage per sheet and round up. A standard 2440 × 1220 mm sheet is 2.98 m², though the usable coverage is less because sheets must break over a support.
What size is a standard sheet?
2440 × 1220 mm, or 8 × 4 feet, across most of the world. Some suppliers stock 2400 × 1200 mm metric sheets, which are slightly smaller and not interchangeable in a layout planned around the imperial size.
Why can't I just divide the area?
Because sheets must be supported at their edges. A 3 m run over joists at 400 mm centres needs two sheets even though the area says one and a quarter, since the offcut cannot bridge unsupported.
Should sheets be staggered?
Yes for structural sheathing and flooring. Continuous joints create a line of weakness, and staggering the rows spreads the load across more framing members.
Do I need an expansion gap?
Usually, around 2 to 3 mm between sheets. Timber-based boards move with humidity, and sheets butted tight will buckle when they take up moisture.
What thickness should I use?
It depends on the span between supports and the load, which is set by the span table for the board type. Thicker boards span further, and the relationship is not linear.

Should sheets be glued as well as screwed?
For flooring, yes — adhesive between joist and sheet largely eliminates squeaks, which are caused by the sheet moving against the fixing. It also stiffens the floor noticeably.
