How the Print Size Calculator works
The maximum print size a file supports is a hard limit set by its pixel count and your minimum acceptable resolution. If the aspect ratio also differs from the print, something crops, and knowing which before printing beats discovering it afterwards.

How large this file can go
Maximum print size is pixel dimensions divided by acceptable resolution, and the word acceptable is where the judgement sits.
A 4000 by 3000 pixel file prints 13.3 by 10 inches at 300 DPI, 20 by 15 at 200, and 26.7 by 20 at 150. All three are the same file and all three are legitimate answers depending on where the print will hang.
Presenting the range rather than a single number is more honest and more useful. Someone asking how big their photo can print usually has a wall in mind, and the wall determines the viewing distance.
Aspect ratio, and the crop nobody planned
Standard print sizes come in ratios that mostly do not match camera sensors, which means almost every print involves a crop.
A 3:2 camera image printed at 8 by 10 inches, which is 4:5, loses a strip from the long edge. At 5 by 7, which is close to 7:5, it loses less. At 6 by 4 it fits exactly.
Which is why the composition matters at capture. Leaving margin around the subject means the crop is a choice rather than a compromise, and photographers who shoot tight find their images do not print at standard sizes without losing something.
Framing, and the size that actually shows
A framed print with a mount shows less than the print size, because the mount overlaps the edges. Typically 5 millimetres on each side, sometimes more.
So a print ordered at exactly the frame's aperture will show slightly less than intended, and anything important near the edge disappears behind the mount.
The convention is to order the print at the full size and accept the overlap, keeping content away from the outer few millimetres. Designing to the visible aperture and then finding the mount covers part of it is the more expensive way round.
Standard sizes by region
The US uses inch-based sizes: 4 by 6, 5 by 7, 8 by 10, 11 by 14, 16 by 20. These are the sizes frames are made in and they are not proportionally related to each other.
Europe uses the A series, where each size is half the previous one and the ratio is constant at the square root of two. That consistency means an A4 image scales to A3 or A5 without cropping, which the inch sizes do not.
Ordering across regions is where this becomes a problem: a design laid out for A4 does not fit US letter, being slightly narrower and longer, and content near the edges will either crop or leave a margin.
Large format, and where the rules change
Above about A2, resolution requirements fall because viewing distance rises, and file handling becomes the practical constraint.
A two metre banner at 300 DPI would be 23,622 pixels on the long edge, which most software will open reluctantly and most RIPs will process slowly. At 100 DPI it is 7874 pixels, which is manageable and looks perfect from any distance a banner is read at.
Large format suppliers usually specify their preferred setup, commonly artwork at a scale such as one tenth at 300 DPI, which yields the same effective resolution in a file a fraction of the size. Following their specification rather than sending the largest possible file is both faster and produces a better result.

Does the paper affect required resolution?
Somewhat, uncoated and textured stocks absorb detail, so very high resolution is wasted on them. Glossy photo paper shows every pixel you give it.
