How large can I print my image?
Pixel dimensions divided by your minimum acceptable DPI. Both dimensions have to clear it, and the smaller of the two governs.
What is an acceptable minimum DPI?
150 for most wall art and posters, 300 for anything examined closely, and lower still for large format viewed at a distance.
What if the aspect ratios do not match?
The image will crop, letterbox or stretch. Cropping is usually the right answer, and choosing where to crop is a design decision rather than a printer's.
Does the paper affect required resolution?
Somewhat, uncoated and textured stocks absorb detail, so very high resolution is wasted on them. Glossy photo paper shows every pixel you give it.
