PaceTypical adult silent reading

The default of 238 words a minute comes from a large meta-analysis of adult silent reading of non-fiction prose. Fiction runs faster, technical material with equations far slower, and the spread between individuals is wide enough that the average is a starting point rather than a prediction. The read-aloud figure uses 130 words a minute, which is the comfortable pace for a presentation with pauses. It is here because a good share of people looking up reading time are really timing a talk, and reading a script at silent-reading pace produces a delivery nobody can follow. Speed-reading claims above about 500 words a minute generally reflect skimming rather than reading, and comprehension testing shows the difference clearly.

How the Reading Time Calculator works

Reading time from a word count, at a pace you can set, with the read-aloud time alongside. The default of 238 words a minute comes from a meta-analysis of adult silent reading rather than a round number someone picked.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to read 1,000 words?

About four minutes silently at an average adult pace, or nearly eight read aloud. Technical material with equations or unfamiliar terms can take three times as long.

What is the average reading speed?

Around 238 words a minute for adults reading non-fiction prose silently, from a meta-analysis of nearly two hundred studies. Fiction runs faster and the spread between individuals is wide.

How many words is a five-minute speech?

About 650, at the 130 words a minute this uses for speaking. That figure allows for pauses and emphasis — scripting at silent-reading pace produces a delivery nobody can follow.

Is speed reading real?

Rates above about 500 words a minute reflect skimming rather than reading, and comprehension testing shows the difference plainly. Improving vocabulary and background knowledge in a subject speeds reading far more reliably than technique does.

Why is reading aloud so much slower?

Speech is limited by articulation rather than comprehension. Silent reading skips the physical production of every syllable, which is most of the difference, and it can also skip and re-scan in ways speech cannot.
