There is no universal words-per-page figure, which is why every input here is explicit. The familiar 500 assumes 12pt Times New Roman, single-spaced, on US Letter with one-inch margins — change any one of those and the number moves. Double spacing halves it. That is the most common reason a submitted essay comes back the wrong length: the word count was right and the page count was calculated single-spaced. Font size scales the count by roughly its square, since both the line height and the character width change together. Going from 12pt to 14pt costs about a quarter of the words on a page, which is more than most people expect.

Margins, paragraph spacing, headings, indentation and figures all take space this cannot see. Treat the result as an estimate for planning rather than a promise about the final document.
