Behind the number
Share of voice is your presence in a channel divided by total category presence: your impressions, mentions or spend ÷ category total × 100.
In paid search it is measurable directly as impression share. In earned media and social it is estimated from mention volume, which is far less precise.
The concept's commercial interest comes from its relationship to market share, which is more contested than the frameworks built on it suggest.
A real example
Category advertising spend estimated at $2.4m annually, of which yours is $324,000: a 13.5% share of voice against a 14.2% share of the defined market.
The two are close, which the traditional framework would describe as equilibrium, spending in proportion to position.
A business at 8% share of voice and 14% market share is under-investing relative to its position and would be expected to lose share over time. One at 22% voice and 14% share is investing to grow.
Whether that relationship holds is the question, and the evidence is stronger in mass-market consumer categories than in niche or search-driven ones.
The usual mistakes
Competitor spend is estimated rather than known, usually from third-party tools with wide error margins. A share of voice figure carries all of that uncertainty and reports it as a precise percentage.
The framework also assumes advertising is the primary driver of share, which is more true in low-differentiation consumer categories than in most of the businesses that apply it.
Using the result
Use impression share in paid channels, where it is measured rather than estimated, and treat wider share of voice as directional at best.
Then judge whether the underlying assumption applies to your category before acting on it. In a search-driven business with a differentiated product, being outspent matters far less than the framework implies.
Where the concept genuinely applies
Share of voice is most predictive in categories where products are broadly interchangeable and the purchase is low-involvement, since salience at the moment of choice is the main driver.
It matters least where customers research actively, where products differ meaningfully, or where distribution rather than awareness is the constraint.
For most small businesses the practical version is much narrower: impression share on the specific search terms that describe what they sell. That is measurable, actionable and directly connected to revenue, where category-level share of voice is usually an expensive way to feel behind.
Organic search visibility is the measurable version for most small businesses, since ranking position across a defined keyword set can be tracked precisely and relates directly to demand capture.
Paid impression share and organic visibility together give a defensible picture of category presence without relying on estimates of competitor spend.
Branded search volume is a useful proxy for category presence, since it measures how many people are actively looking for you rather than how much you spent being visible.
Category search volume trends are worth watching alongside your own visibility, since holding share in a shrinking category is a different situation from holding it in a growing one.

Frequently asked questions
How do I estimate category spend?
Industry data, competitor filings, or ad intelligence tools. All are approximate, so treat share of voice as a directional measure rather than a precise one.
Does it apply to organic visibility?
Yes, search share of voice measures the same idea for organic results. The mechanism differs but the strategic logic is the same.
