How the Shipping Cost Calculator works
Carriers do not bill on the number your scale shows. They bill on billable weight — the greater of actual weight and dimensional weight — then add fuel, residential and any accessorial surcharges. A parcel quoted at one rate routinely invoices at another because of that gap.

What is billable weight?
The greater of actual weight and dimensional weight. Dimensional weight is length × width × height ÷ a carrier divisor (commonly 139 for imperial inches and pounds, or 5000 for centimetres and kilograms). A light bulky box is billed on its size, not its mass.
Why is my invoice higher than the quote?
Usually surcharges. Fuel is a percentage applied to the base rate and changes weekly. Residential delivery, remote area, oversize and address correction are all added after the quote. Together they routinely add 20-35% to the headline rate.
How much can better packaging save?
A great deal when dimensional weight is the binding constraint. Reducing a box from 12 × 10 × 8 inches to 10 × 8 × 6 cuts dimensional weight by nearly half. For light products, box size is usually the largest single lever on shipping cost.
Should I use flat rate or calculated shipping?
Flat rate wins for heavy items travelling far, since weight and distance stop mattering. Calculated wins for light items going a short distance. Run both through the comparison calculator against your actual order mix rather than assuming.
