Parallel wiring divides the load: two 8-ohm speakers present 4 ohms, four present 2. Series wiring adds instead — two 8-ohm speakers present 16 — which is safe for the amplifier but wastes power and damps the drivers against each other. Most home and car amplifiers are rated to 4 ohms, plenty are stable to 2, and very few will drive 1 ohm without protection cutting in or something failing. The rating on the back is a floor, not a target. The power-per-speaker figure assumes identical speakers sharing evenly, which parallel wiring does and series wiring does not once impedances differ. Nominal impedance is also a single-figure summary of a curve that swings widely with frequency — a speaker labelled 8 ohms may dip to 3 at its hardest point.

What impedance do two 8-ohm speakers present?
4 ohms in parallel, 16 ohms in series. Parallel is the usual wiring and the one that needs checking, because it halves the load with two speakers and quarters it with four.
What happens if the impedance is too low?
The amplifier draws more current than its output stage is designed for. It runs hot, clips early, and either trips into protection or fails outright. The minimum impedance printed on the back is a floor, not a target.
Is series or parallel better?
Parallel gives more power and better damping but a lower load; series is safe for the amplifier but wastes power and lets speakers interact through each other. Parallel is standard where the amplifier can take it.
Can I mix speakers of different impedances?
Electrically yes, practically with care. In parallel the lower-impedance speaker draws more power and plays louder; in series the higher-impedance one does. Matched pairs avoid the problem entirely.
Is a speaker's impedance really a single number?
No. Nominal impedance summarises a curve that swings widely with frequency — a speaker labelled 8 ohms may dip to 3 at its hardest point, which is why some amplifiers struggle with loads that look safe on paper.
